As someone who knows little to nothing about camping, I was expecting an upside down flame 😂

Sixty years ago i read a book devoted to early American literature and in the book was a letter, with instructions, written in the 17th Century stating that the Lenni-Lenape referred to this kind of fire as a Council Fire, for obvious reasons and seasoned tribal firebuilders often controlled the length of the Council by the size of the fire. A lesson I have never forgotten.

Also known as the top down method. I use this 90% of the time because it's the most efficient fire as it burns the off gasses with minimal smoke.

Wow! Thanks!

After 30+ years of avid camping, this is something i was not aware of. I now recognize that I've used this method in a manner to get damp wood going. But it was not out of awareness, but rather hand feeding the flames for a bit. Which ends up doing the same thing.

I will definitely be giving this a try.

I saw a guy pack dirt in between the big stuff at the bottom and it took like a day and a half for it to burn all the way down. He was using bigger stuff than you had down there.

I swear this is the best channel I've followed so far. I only care for useful information and this gold.

I was considering lighting my upstairs neighbor's apartment on fire because I didn't think fire was capable of burning downwards. Glad I watched this first. 👍

I thought the fire would burn downwards. I feel like an idiot yet I've gained knowledge. I've never been camping nore do I know how to start a fire, but this has taught me something. Thank you.

I’ve done this in our wood stove a few times and works great there too! Lol…the first time my hubby saw me doing it, he asked me what I was doing. Told him I saw it on YouTube for a campfire (this was several years ago) and figured if it worked great for a campfire, it should work just as well in a stove. At first he thought I was nuts. I told him, “if it doesn’t work like think it will, we don’t ever have to do it again. However, it did work like I thought it would and instead of having to add more wood to it within 30-45 minutes like normally, it burned for a longtime. He was amazed. ☺️
