Just wanna point out that flatbed drivers do shake cars off their bed when it's stuck in park while the truck is also in park. Definitely could contribute to the issues.

I'm extremely interested in this video. After having differential issues with four different rear wheel drive vehicles I've owned over the years, I'm very concerned about avoiding further troubles. I've read several of the comments, and the conclusion I draw from the video and comments is that the differentials need proper treatment, just like the engines and transmissions. I plan to make some changes as to the way I park on hills, hitching up trailers, going from drive to reverse, or from reverse to drive. Also, checking, adding and changing the oil more regularly.
This has been a very beneficial video for me. Thank you, Dave and also all who have added comments as well.
👍🏻👍🏻

My new favorite quote from Einstein: if you can explain something simply then you know what you are talking about. The ability to make the complex easy to understand by anyone is a sign of your vast knowledge.

Dave your hands have been at it for longer than mine, but gears are the 1 place I throw a set of gloves on for. They can be deceptively sharp, I nearly lost my pinky on a Pinion Gear.

Explaining to the customer what and why is always the best policy. Good on you

Your break-downs and explanations of various mechanical problems are the best!
Hell! Even my wife likes listening to them!

As an industrial gearbox repair man that is called pitting and is caused by cavitation of the diffoil which is caused by the wrong fluid, poor fluid quality, wrong level or poor design by the diff cover

Great information! Company safety and maintenance meetings should be a Monday priority before each work week! Keep up the great work!

He is 100% right, people driving vehicles they do not own, treat them as crap, or worse a rolling dumpster full of anything they drop on the floor and such. They do not care unless they have to pay for the damage.

Im kinda of a diy mechanic and i just did a axle rebuild for my truck it was the first one ive done setting the preload and backlash on the ring gear and pinion yoke made me nervous for some reason. Everything is driving well ive drove on two long trips and to work everyday and so far so good fingers crossed 🤞. I have so much respect for quality mechanics now!!

Not disagreeing with you, just stating what I’ve seen in my 40 years as a mechanic.
I’ve seen moisture in the differential fluid, cause the surface of the gears to rust and pit when the vehicle isn’t being driven a lot. Once the surfaces meet, it wears off the gear.
Cheap differential fluid and the wrong type or viscosity can cause it too.

Drove construction vehicles for decades and one thing I learned is most employees don't give 2 💩's about taking care of company vehicles but just a check on Friday.

Drove a 10 yo 3/4 ton Chevy manual pick up plowing snow in Buffalo for years same clutch while the young guys tore up clutches and transmissions. Not the equipment...skill!

My idiot buddy in high school did a neutral slam on his 70 El Camino and it sheared the 1.5" stem off that pinion gear like it had been cut in a lathe! He also broke several teeth in the pumpkin. He's lucky he didn't damage the transmission as well!

The number one reason Dave. Is the driver shifting forward/backward and letting up on clutch pedal BEFORE the truck has come to complete rolling stop.
Yes the u-joint gets broken and replaced but diff not touched since everyone figured joint ate the damage. But the motion is still transferred inside before the joint breaks. Great videos, many thx

A brake depressor when loading, or offloading truck would work if the truck doesn’t have air brakes. If it has air brakes set the damn air brakes. If going up a hill and you’re heavy, use the lowest gear and stay on that gear. Don’t shift until you’re on a less steep incline or level ground.

Thanks for everything you do for us boss. Love the info. An informed customer will make your job easier at the end of the day (even if it temporarily makes things seem harder)

There's a guy on here that's comment was spot on, it's not from rocking its poor oil and lack there of, I worked for a ring and pinion shop for 9 years and seen it all, that's from poor oil and the debris In the oil chewing away at the gear.
