No one can make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up like Levi Stubbs. What a powerful, beautiful, masculine, expressive and unique voice. Motown and Berry Gordy found an astonishing number of artists with wonderful, expressive voices and when Mr. Stubbs, Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Martha Reeves, Wanda Rogers, Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, Mary Wells, David Ruffin, etc., sang only a syllable or two, they were instantly identifiable. That they found so many of them within a few blocks or miles of one another is a "lightning in a bottlle" kind of thing that happens only once. Mr. Stubbs' cousin, Jackie Wilson, was a great performer, but his success cannot compare to Mr. Stubbs, with the Four Tops and on his own. He was simply the best. When I listen to this song now, it is even more poignant because I know that at the time of his death, he and his wife Clineice had been married for more than 40 years (parenting five children). When he sings the song, it is obvious that it comes from some place deep inside him. He is greatly missed, but thank heavens we have his amazing catalog of music to enjoy forever!
