IN THIS VIDEO
Scleral lenses can be one of the most difficult contact lenses to put in your eye. These lenses are usually prescribed for patients that have keratoconus or other corneal irregularities, or even with high astigmatism. They are called scleral lenses because the lenses fit and rest on the sclera, not the cornea. These lenses have amazing benefits, and can sometimes give a person their best vision possible. These lenses will also likely be used as Virtual Reality Contacts in the future.

I'm over 30, history of keratoconus and two cornea transplants, I cant drive because I've never seen good enough in my life. But recently i started using sclerals and it's a miracle, I have 20/20 vision now. This is life changer.

I have Posterior Polymorphous Corneal Dystrophy, which is a rare genetic disease. Because of the multitude of lesions on my cornea, I have severe astigmatism and have never been able to see well with glasses or contact lenses.

At the time, my optometrist had ever seen PPCD before because it was still fairly undocumented and I was too young to consider surgery, so he decided to fit me for scleral lenses as an experimental treatment. That day, it changed my life forever. I cried because of how well I could see. The technology was still super new so I was one of the first individuals in my area to receive these lenses and have a successful experience. I believe I might be part of a medical study online as an anonymous patient of using these lenses for treating PPCD.

Great video!! I’ve gotten such dry eyes going through menopause that I can’t wear my usual soft contacts anymore. I have an appointment in two weeks for the sclera lenses! I’m so excited 🎉

This is an interesting option for those of us suffering from severe dry eyes. Thanks for the tutorial! (P.S. Your co-host was pleasant and helpful, too.)

How about discussing hybrid scleral lenses? They have a soft skirt and rigid center.

Just got my pair and it is incredible how well I can see now (-12 in both eyes). They are very comfortable, far more comfortable than even soft lens - I'm amazed.

I thought I was the biggest hot mess during my first sceral lens fitting, but that story made me feel a lot better! I’m glad that patient found something else that worked for him.

After years of pain (because of dry eyes which started with my graft versus host disease.) They finally gave me scleral lenses and man, since then i have no pain anymore. I can see much better again. I'm really happy with it. They do cost a pretty penny but they are worth it!

I'm so jealous of all these people that can do a scleral lens, they told me my scleral junction, where it meets the cornea is too irregular, it took them almost 20 mins and 3 different doctors to get it off my eye during the trial, they said there is no way it was going to work, as the 16 size (biggest size they had) really wasn't "steep enough to vault over the cornea" but yet way too big on the eye. On top of that, since the Hydrosoft Torics I've been wearing for the last 25 years have been discontinued, I'm being forced back into hard lenses. At this point I've gone from correctable (to 20/40-20/50) to almost 20/100, just because there just aren't any lenses left that are good enough. Fingers-crossed the hard lenses will work out, though they literally feel like sandpaper scratching my eye.

My eye doctor yesterday told me she wants to try this type of lens. I have palsy to left side of my face and left eye has a platinum plate in the eye lid to help it close. The plate sits closer to the inside of my eye.
Do you think I can wear this type of lens with a plate?
My doctor has spent 2 years fighting various eye infections and dry eye. That has settled down with the Xylitol eye drops. But my vision is extremely blurry and no corrected eye glasses has given me clear vision. She is thinking we should try this. Before I spend a lot down this path. I wonder what your thoughts are in using this with a plate ?

Had RK surgery 30+ years ago. I am 75 years old. I now have fluctuating vision. Are these a good option?
