A video essay discussing the short-lived trading card game, Chaotic, and how it implemented its narrative through its gameplay mechanics. I hope you enjoy this little video about a card game that I’m very much hoping makes a return, as it was unique and beloved by so many. #Chaotic

Facts.

When I watched the cartoon, I felt the battle of the Four Tribes against the M'arillians was a parallel to classic cards fighting to stay relevant in a fast changing meta.

Duuuude! I felt so bad for Rellim. He just wanted to live his life defending the mills. Then he gets brainwashed and when he's finally free, he finds his home completely destroyed, his task as a caretaker utterly failed. It's all conveyed through the art in the cards.

Don't forget to mention, we also saw the release of Warbeasts and those had lore on them as well!

The mipedian tribe conjured warbeasts to protect themselves, and one was even specifically for the royalty(I forgot which one, but it had the highest wisdom of all the warbeasts)!
Some warbeasts have text that suggest not a lot of mipedians like the idea of them. That the warbeasts are unnatural, not safe (ex. the text on Glost reads "If more Warbeasts are our only hope for survival, I fear for our future!" and the text on Blazvatan reads "conjuringis worthless without control.")

Although, this could 100% be fan speculation, but on the wiki take a look at Ninren.
"After the M'arrillian Invasion, Ninren was created by the conjurors using a lightning storm. Originally, he was made to work with the Tribal Alliance, but when the Alliance dissolved, Ninren was instead used against the Danians."

Even if this is speculation, I like to think they beat the m'rillians

I loved how good the cards looked, the design for each creature was so unique and colorful. Another great thing is when you get a creature they aren't always the same so it makes you feel you get more bang for the buck. Because you can always get a better card with better stats.

Loved this! Since I got hyped at the news of Chaotic getting re-released months ago, I haven't heard any news. I needed my fix.

There really is amazing lore to this game, specifically because of the M'arrillians. The Mipedians start conjuring more and more dangerous Warbeasts to the point where they make the horrific Khorror and they worry that even if they win the war, Perim will still be destroyed in the ensuing chaos. Locations that existed in previous sets are slowly flooded and tainted to suit the M'arrillians like the Storm Tunnel which had 4 different cards devoted to it. You have the basic version to start, then one where it was in the process of being flooded, one after that which showed the M'arrillians had secured it and then lastly one where the M'arrillians had been pushed out but the damage was not suddenly fixed and it would have lasting consequences.

I was (and still am) a big fan of the Underworlders and Chaor specifically and I vividly remember looking through the Forged Unity cards and seeing Chaor: The Fierce. I was genuinely heartbroken seeing him on the run and all alone and that was well before any episode relating to that came out. Truly shows how incredible the cards were at telling a story

My absolute favorite thing about the M'arrillian Invasion arc was that it was not only a battle between the tribes of Perim and the Deep Ones, but a struggle for older cards to stay relevant in a changing metagame. There was something so poetic about it.

Also, my favorite "unified" flavor text has to come from High Muge Kopond, who also is also a "loyal" card. "Tonight, we may dine as fellow muges [mages], but as the sun rises, we are enemies once again."

Goes to show that different characters had different motivations for joining the united army.

Wow this is such a nostalgic trip...I remember when I looked forward to new episodes being released weekly, then it suddenly ended. Absolutely tragic

I got curious after you told me about this one and it's honestly peaked my interest. I had no idea that something like Chaotic had such developed lore. I hadn't thought of Chaotic in probably like 7 years, but you managed to make it interesting. :D Good stuff, dude.

the game was way ahead of its time. The cards actually got you into the show and vice versa applies whereas nowadays, typically the show gets you in the game, but the people playing couldn't care less about the show.
