Why I don't play Starbound Anymore

In today's video, I'll be discussing Starbounds updates since its full release in 2016.

I really do enjoy Starbound, and like I mention at the very end of the video. Not every game has to be replayed 50 times! I seriously can't wait for Chucklefish's Wizard game though.

(check him out, he's really funny!)

Fingers crossed that Starbound Update 1.4 is a banger!

I miss the early beta of Starbound when there was a Temperature system, each race's armors gave them exclusive abilities and there was far more weapons that the game could generate.

I love the game but it feels stale because the story revolves around just scanning stuff, and it just gets boring

Terraria works because whatever story it has is shoved WAY into the background, almost to the point of nonexistence, and the player's goals just coincidentally align with the story.

Starbound forces the player to follow a storyline, making the player come to the bosses after spending a gruesome amount of time scanning stuff.

Terraria, like minecraft, just dumps you in the world and says good luck.
Starbound holds your hand the entire time.

I feel you chippy, imo starbound was in this best state during the beta early beta phase, back then, you crafted items to summon the next tier of boss, and I liked that the most, cause starbound wasn't so liner then, back then it was a lot more like Terraria, you did what you wanted when you wanted and the game ended when you wanted it to, now its "go here, do this, then go here do that, and then tada you win" and after that win, there's no feel to do anything more, there's no reason do anything more

I did much prefer starbound when it was Space Terraria

Yeah this is true, I loved starbound in the beta state, when there was different level zones with all biomes. Now it is so boring when the game just pushes you to the next biome.

I think they should make the current one "story mode" and make the old beta one a new gamemode called "adventure" or something.

I miss butterfly boost. Rip.

Starbound felt like a huge game when I started playing it for a couple of days until I realized I almost discovered everything immediately, like the planets and stuff. But I liked it.

Tbh, the only real reason I still play Starbound is because I like the building better than Terraria. With all the different furniture pieces, I feel like I can make my builds come to life more. But I'm not a fan of the story tbh.

I can really understand where you're coming from honestly. As someone who's played a lot of starbound, I've realised that all this time was really just as one character. I don't enjoy the gameplay progression as much as I did the first time so I can relate there. I haven't played the game for a few months now, the only thing that kept me going was building but even that has its limits. As much as I still love the game, I can't help but joining you in the hope that 1.4 revitalizes a passion for the game that I've lost.

I hated that they added a story to the game, completely ruined my immersion.
Monster sounds disappeared and monsters don't look as random as they used to be (design wise).

Get Frackin' Universe, makes the game a whole new thing. I would have 250 hours less if I didn't install it.
EDIT: 450 hours less now, lol. I Think by now I've exhausted all of FU I enjoy as well.

Chippy I have the same problem with Terraria. When they added new end game content I was like "ok cool now I got it but what now". It always bugged me that the Portal Gun which can be used for much more things throughout your playthrough, is being achieved in the end but there was nothing to do.

Lmao I just picked up starbound again while watching your series and this comes up. LOL

Honestly before the story was added to the game Starbound was one of my favorite games in my Steam library. You just felt so free while playing it, with no set goals or a linear path to follow the universe was yours! However raw mediocrity is what became of the game with its predictable and overall boring storyline...

Chippy tbh most of what you're saying can be said to any game

It fell apart when they decided to sepparate fighting from building shit.
They even went out of their way to remove any possibilities to build an autofarm and made traps non-mineable so pretty much everything you build that isn't an airlock is purely cosmetic.

Meanwhile in terraria, you are required to build your own boss arena, you can even automate the whole battle with traps and teleporters and have the tools to build a whole slew of contraptions to make life easier.
Building has meaning in terraria while starbound is almost embarassed about it and wishes it was an action game.
