In my opinion, Starbound is miles from Terraria. Starbound is much more about exploration and discovery, while Terraria is more about adventure and creation.

Been playing this game since 2013 when it hit early access. I can't believe how far it's come. Starbound really evolved into a refined experience that I can get lost in for hundreds of hours. I hope it gets more attention because this game deserves it!

Starbound vs Terraria

Weapons:

Terraria has a diverse amount of weapons to choose from. Swords, spears, axes, and more are all abundant. Also included are guns and magic staffs, which both have a unique feel. Guns require ammo, which adds another layer to ranged combat, while magic weapons require mana, which will regenerate slowly. Extremely large variety in weapons.

Starbound has many weapons to choose from. Swords, spears, hammers, axes, guns, and magic staffs. One or two handed weapons add another layer of combat, allowing for interesting combos. Instead of bullets, guns and staffs use energy, which is quickly replenished. Many weapons have secondary abilities, which also cost energy, allowing for more diverse combat. Semi-large variety in weapons, as well as weapon rarity. However, all but the legendary weapons feel extremely similar. Some weapons also feature elemental damage, which may be strong/weak against certain enemies.

Winner: Starbound

Enemies/bosses

Terraria has many bosses, most of which are naturally spawned in the world after completing certain objectives. Although built on basic combat moves, each boss feels unique. Each boss has a very large drop pool, including weapons, armor, and materials. Extreme variety in enemy types, however, all of which have similar attack styles. Despite this, different damage outputs and defense, as well as slightly varying attacks keep each enemy feeling fresh and exciting. Each enemy also has unique drops, such as materials, weapons, or banners.

Starbound has many enemies, varying by planet. However, most enemies have extremely similar attack styles, with little variation. There are few exceptions to this. Bosses all feel very unique, with included cinematic dialogue and story. Each boss has 1 unique drop, and a random loot pool at the end via chest.

Winner: Terraria

Building/mining:

Terraria offers many options for mining. A very large amount of biomes, all with unique ores, loot, and blocks, means you have to be prepared for every situation. A large amount of tools, including pickaxes, drills, axes, and hammers are available. Each offers a varying level of speed when mining, as well as effective block types. Building is extremely easy. He cursor is responsive and accurate, and an extremely diverse block type means there are endless possibilities and styles.

Starbound has one main tool for mining, which gets the job done. However, this lack of diversity can be boring. Optional pickaxes and drills are useful, but break easily and end up being a waste of space. Different ore types vary by planet, forcing you to explore. A large amount of block types as well, but not as expansive as Terraria. Building can be a chore. Blocks can only be placed in 2x2, which doesn't give much precision. Cursor is responsive and accurate, but highlighted blocks can be hard to see, resulting in accidental breaking of blocks and furniture. Crafting recipies are also required to build certain furniture items, doors, and blocks, which does offer more to do but can become repetitive and time consuming.

Winner: Terraria

Exploration/replayability

Terraria offers many different biomes, mini-biomes, and randomly generated structures to explore. The world is very vast, and filled with many things to do. There are offerings for players of all kind, from builders, explorers, collectors, and fighters. However, after obtaining the end-game gear, defeating all the bosses, and building a suitable home for you and your npc's, there isn't much else to do. Playing with friends is fun, and does offer slightly more content, like PvP.

Starbound's universe is extremely massive. However, the randomly generated nature means that there isn't much variety to the landscapes. Nonetheless, the biomes, villages, temples, mining facilities, and everything in between are all extremely satisfying to explore. The story missions add some replayability, but the real replay factor comes from exploring new planets, finding more loot, and most of all, completing the various side missions. Although the sidemissions can be repetitive, they are usually worth doing, as they offer money, materials, and sometimes even worthy crew members. Additionally, different characters and races can be made, which changes the experience enough to consider doing.

Winner: Starbound

the only thing keeping me frmo buying this was that, at first glance, it seemed so similar to the Terraria i'd loved and, depressingly, gotten tired of rather quickly. but when you mentioned it had multiple planets, well... i was sold. and so was the game.

Its really a game that is worth to buy. If you add the enormous amount of mods, this game is almost infinite.
