In my opinion Big Mom is the definition of great talent that stopped challenging herself. When she was younger she was part of an incredible fleet but even then she never constantly tried to get the One Piece. She was strong, maybe even stronger than other yonkos, but she was lazy, remaining cozy in her islands. She never pushed herself to her limit therefore she never understood what were them, that is also the reason why she thought she was gonna survive until the end (while Kaido at the last moment understood he was defeated). She did not understand defeat because she had never been at her limit before.
