It is a great shame that the villa of (possibly) the Roman Praefectus of the Classis Britannica at Folkestone was not excavated 40 or 50 years ago before erosion destroyed so much of the building. Priceless artefacts, mosaics and information have undoubtedly been lost for ever. However at least now excavations are being carried out - better late than never, even if with a tear in one's eye.

There are many fascinating amcient cities in Britain, but York is one of the most beautiful and historical of all - with Chester coming alongside. Strolling through the medieval streets of York transforms one into the Middle Ages while the great city walls seem to take one back even further to the Roman era. In particular, many Americans just cannot comprehend that York was built by the Romans in 78 AD, nearly 1, 950 years ago and that traces of the Roman city and great Roman fortress can still be seen today.
