Used the metal ones since the early 60's and cracked one record. Plastic ones go in easier but slip when stacked on top of others

I highly doubt the metal inserts are from any time in the 1940s. The 45 RPM was introduced in 1949, and initially, they were only playable on RCA changers that had the fat spindle to match the hole in the record. No adapters would have been necessary until later when turntables were made to play both RCA 45s and Columbia LP formats as well as 78s.

I don't like using ANY of the adapters shown in this video. I have found over the years, that these adapters will fall out and scratch the playing surface of the records when they fall inside the record covers. I would ALWAYS recommend that you use an adaptor that fits onto the turntable spindle.
