DIVER LEFT STRANDED AT SEA RECORDS HIS 'FINAL HOURS'

Jacob Childs was stranded 30 nautical miles from shore and can hear rescue helicopters looking for him but at the same time he watches helplessly the sun going down and darkness begins to fill the sky. He knows that if he's not found before night fall he might not make it through the night, so he decides to record his "final hours" with his GoPro.

At some point, after hours of floating out in the middle of the ocean he takes a moment to analyze his situation, he knows he's in a tough spot. With the camera recording he utters what can potentially be his "Final Words": "So that's it. The sun goes down they won't do nothing. That's a wrap on old Jakey".

We react to the video and discuss what can we learn from incidents such as this one in order to make diving safer.

This same thing happened to my and my friend in FL. We were left with our instructor after a check out dive for Advanced NAUI. The dive boat was also running tethered snorkelers and the anchor slipped and the boat drifted - Gulf Stream. When we surfaced the boat was on the horizon. We had a surface swim to catch-up of ~2 miles. When we reached it the instructor went to 'talk' to the skipper and we did a headcount of the snorkelers. They were short. We geared up again and conducted a search ultimately finding a couple clinging to each other. This was in the late 90's. The operator is no longer in business. We were happy to be alive.

7 years ago, I was diving in Galapagos. I was a frequent diver and it was an amazing dive with lots of hammerheads and other sharks but unfortunately I struggled with my buoyancy, lost the group and ended up on the surface..

So there I was, in the middle of the ocean, didn’t see the boat or anything but water and had no clue what to do..
I decided to try my luck and dive back down to find the group.

Until this day, I have no clue how I found the group (and my clueless buddy) and I know for a fact they hadn’t noticed my absence..

This story gives me the chills; I was so extremely blessed to came back in one piece.
I never dived again which is bittersweet because I loved it..

Thanks for reading ❤

Jake, your calm demeanor is probably what kept you from totally giving up and going under. So glad you kept calm, AND VERY HAPPY YOU WERE SAVED!!

How you forget an entire human being on a trip like this is beyond me.

Utterly heartbreaking. The amount of negligence resulting in him being left behind is unconscionable and terrifying.

He survived after being found 6 hours later. He went diving the next day. Rescue crew said he did everything right. He didn’t panic.

I am not a diver.
I have been a boat owner for many years and you are as the owner and captain responsible for the Safety of every person on your vessel until back on shore!!!

When you think life is tough then just remember you could be lost at sea.

Great work Jake, glad you got through it.

That time lapse when it showed the sun setting absolutely made my heart drop. I truly thought he was done while seeing his last hope leave him. Truly glad he made it out alive and was rescued!

I love how Woody is such a big advocate of accountability & safety. Definitely wish everyone had that level of integrity.

Had a female friend of mine who went diving in the Mediterranean and when she came up the boat was gone…she thought she was going to die but the boat realized they screwed up and actually found her after three hours.

When Gus pulled out his light and said it's this easy, I knew something was up. There's no way he would be that light hearted about a tragedy.

There’s very little that gives me more anxiety than this video. Great reactions, old but gold. I’m so glad he’s still here.
