WOW! I would have never guessed that standardized test were not the best way to judge what students are learning!

As a teacher they are the main cause of students being dumbed down because you have to teach to the test. And I have been told that verbatim. It’s all about the scores, money and district and state reputation and accolades on the backs of students and teachers.!

To everyone who made a sarcastic comment about teachers, teaching, and standardized tests here:

TEACHERS DON’T CHOOSE TO ADMINISTER STANDARDIZED TESTS! These tests are administered year after year by the federal and state governments. Talk to your local politicians and representatives in the House about eliminating standardized tests once and for all. And write the Secretary of Education a letter while you’re at it. Only they have the real power to abolish this means of academic evaluation.

This. My son has dysgraphia and even with accommodations does not test well. If asked the questions out loud, he does fine but this isn't usually an option with standardized tests.

As a teacher I’ve always said that standardised tests would only be great IF - we taught standardised students with standardised abilities from standardised backgrounds, who during the tests were all experiencing a standardised day!
In 39 years of teaching I’ve never come across a SINGLE student who fits that criteria, so to me it seems daft that some education sectors across the world still use these tests.

I have a soap box against standardized testing. I had a personal experience with how inaccurate these tests are in the seventh grade. We were tested at the start of the year and placed in classes based on the results. I was started in an average class group where I was breezing through with top grades. Half way through the year (literally half the year) I was moved to an advanced class. I had missed all the foundation for the classes I was moved to. My grades plummeted.
Math and science were the worst. I have never finished a standardized test in my life. I didn’t even complete all the sections on my nursing license testing. I did pass. For the record I am a white female. Standardized testing is a disservice to students and teachers. You have the right to refuse standardized testing for your children. If all parents start refusing something will have to change. Unfortunately your children will have to take some form of standardized testing to get into college.

What standards were those studies based on to claim that the standardized test are not an accurate representation of education?

What standard do we use to judge education obtained?

Yes the school system should be judged on bad testing scores. But the children should not be judged on the scores. It should be a good gauge to figure out if children are learning the curriculum

Teacher here. Tbh, parents just need to encourage their kids to fail the EOGs. The EOGs do not matter, and have no bearing on whether or not a kid moves on to the next grade. Quite literally, a kid can get F’s all year, and then get 1’s on their EOGs and nothing will happen to the kid.

Bottom line, things won’t get better till we stop taking these tests so seriously.

Surprise! Surprise! Surprise! Can we just do away with them already!?!?!?!?

Try NOT teaching to the test and just getting your class ready for life, getting them ready for life at the next level. You might do it one time. But only God can help you if your kids don’t do that great on the test. 😢

so students don’t like standardized tests, scientists say they’re ineffective and teachers are misjudged off of them, yet we still have them🤨

They can give a picture of the socioeconomic factors on the students life, so they more accurately reflect quality of life under a particular government jurisdiction. Don’t worry America you are now catching up again to Uganda.
