Rami Malek was originally set to reprise his role as Freddie Mercury and make a cameo appearance to show the friendship that Freddie and Elton John actually had in real life. The producers ended up scrapping the idea in the end. Originally, Tom Hardy was set to play Elton John, but the production was delayed for three years, and his schedule had filled up to the point that he had to drop out. Also, Rob Delaney had filmed a cameo as Elvis Presley, but they ended up cutting it from the final cut too. Justin Timberlake was also eyed to play Elton for quite some time, and Elton even mentioned that he would’ve been his pick to play him back in 2012.

For me, Taron was the perfect person to play Elton John. He sang Still Standing in the first Sing film and Elton John was also in Kingsmen the Golden Circle. Taron already had a connection to Elton John so it just seemed perfect to me!
