-----------------------------------------

The legendary tale of King Henry VIII and his six wives is well-known, marking a pivotal moment in Western history with the founding of the Church of England.

This significant religious transformation stemmed from Henry's frustration with the Pope's refusal to annul his marriage, leading to a bold break from the Catholic Church.

Yet, beyond the common narratives, there lies a fascinating story about an aristocratic family intertwined deeply with this history, having provided two of Henry's wives.

This family, the Howard Family, Dukes of Norfolk, has maintained a prominent position in British nobility since their noble title was first created by Richard III, a king whose notoriety was later immortalized by Shakespeare.

The Howard family has navigated through the tumultuous periods of English history, including the Wars of the Roses, and has remained at the forefront of the aristocracy to this day.

In this episode, we dive into the legacy of the Howard family, highlighting their significance as the most prestigious aristocrats in Britain who are not royals.

As the current head, Edward FitzAlan-Howard, the 18th Duke of Norfolk, embodies the storied heritage and elevated status of England's premier duke in 2024, managing duties and properties that underscore his family’s historical significance.

Arundel Castle, the primary residence, is not merely a home but a grand testament to the family's enduring legacy, showcasing architectural splendor and a repository of history.

The Howard family's assets extend beyond lush landscapes, including significant estates like Kenninghall Place, which add layers to their aristocratic relevance in modern times.

The personal life of the Duke is equally interwoven with his noble duties.

Married to Georgina Susan Gore and later to Francesca Herbert, his life reflects a narrative rich with historical echoes akin to a Shakespearean drama, full of personal and political intrigue.

The Dukedom of Norfolk stands as the oldest existing dukedom in England, established in 1483 by Richard III.

This title not only places the Duke at the top of the non-royal British hierarchy but also involves responsibilities like organizing state ceremonies, highlighting the Duke's integral role in national affairs.

The Howard family's story is also deeply linked to the religious landscapes of Britain.

Despite enduring periods of exclusion and marginalization due to their Catholic faith, the Howards have been pivotal figures through the English Reformation and beyond.

Their lineage includes notable figures such as Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard, tying them directly to pivotal moments in British history.

Moreover, the Howard family claims descent from Hereward the Wake, symbolizing a legacy of resistance and English endurance against domination.

This legendary connection, along with their documented history and contributions to the nation's spiritual and political realms, paints a picture of a family not only of old money but of historical pillars of the British aristocratic tradition.

Thus, the Howard Family, Dukes of Norfolk, stand not merely as holders of wealth and title but as custodians of a significant portion of England's historical narrative, shaping the cultural and political landscape of the nation across centuries.

As we continue to explore their impact, their story remains a compelling chronicle of aristocracy, power, and survival through the ages.

Fascinating - many thanks! (Presumably, the family background of Henry Arundel played absolutely no role in his apparently seamless move into private equity?!!)

Re: Chapter 4 - The 16th Duke of Norfolk, Bernard Marmaduke Fitzalan-Howard -
I knew nothing about His Grace or the family's extraordinary history until watching your exquisite video. However, I do have a few short questions:
1) Who wrote this brilliant piece?
2) Who eloquently narrated it?
3) If Bernard was only 9 years old when obtaining the titles *16th Duke of Norfolk & Earl Marshal*, who was his "regent" before he came of age (18)?

Interesting documentary regarding British royal and non-royal history.

1 question and 1 complaint: 1) Is the reason for their current (non-royal) status due to Katherine Howard's 'fall from grace' so many centuries, ago? In other words did that one situation effectively knock the rest of her family out of the good graces of the royal household for centuries to come? 2) I think your description box is far too extensive. Most creators that I have watched stick to writing short, brief descriptions IN the description box. Sometimes they will link videos below or give source credit for music, other referenced videos, and / or film, pictures or photos of other displayed material.

Not a criticsm. Just a suggestion.
