When the United States first entered World War One, the French and British wanted US troops as replacements to fill billets in the French and British armies, they would also be serving under European commanders. General "Black Jack" Pershing utterly refused the ridiculous request, him wanting American troops to fight under American commanders instead. General Pershing couldn't convince any of the French and British generals, but in order to break this stalemate, he made an agreement with the French and British. General Pershing was given the task of taking the French town of Cantigny, just south of Amiens, that had been under German control and had repelled 3 British and 2 French attacks to retake the village. If the US could take the village back, then General Pershing would be granted his terms of US troops serving under US commanders only. The French and British proposed this mission specifically due to the immense difficulty and probable defeat of Pershing's forces in the process. On May 28th, 1918, General Pershing took the village within 16 hours. The European forces were shocked and astonished at this feat, deciding they should keep a close eye on the "Yanks" for the duration of the war. The event was known as the Battle of Cantigny, and it was not the first nor the last time that American forces were given seemingly impossible tasks with unbeatable odds, but managed to execute the mission to the bewilderment of the world.

This is basically the theme song of American military interventionism and I'm OK with that.

Love the line "And we won't come back till it's over over there!" or whatever it was. Sounds so... Menacing! Like "You're gonna eat shit even if we have to feed it straight outta your own ass" kinda energy.
