I used to have a VW Passat 1.8T Sport 99T and a Passat SE 4motion 2003. Both great car's to drive and very reliable.

Thank you for this video. There are still quite a few of these cars in New Zealand in good condition - I saw a V6 version just yesterday - and they are certainly a good low budget option here, even with the insurance issues. I have even seen a much-desired W8 one which I understand is extremely rare in the UK!

Excellent review, Mr Lloyd. I'm just catching up on the videos. These were very good cars and the benchmark for all saloons at the time to live up to. As you know, the Passat lost its crown once the Superb Mk2 came along.

Interesting history with this car. I really like the velour upholstery. It does look like an incredibly well engineered car.

I'd love a spin in a W8 version. 😎 IIRC the otr prices of those were £40, 000 in 2002/03.

The 20 valve 2.3 litre V5 is a superb torquey engine 👌

Theres something about that interior that is so germanic and well thought out. I generally prefer the mk3 Mondeo but the interior design in these is so much nicer.

You could also get a special beige leather interior on the W8 Passat with wood trim.

Original Passats also had longitudinally-mounted engines. Does it improve the centre of gravity and assist the handling?

How precise the joins are, between the exerior panels, and also between the parts of the dashboard! Beautiful car, even today! But like today - too much GREY inside! However, I would instinctivey decide to liven it up with some EMERALD FREEN carpets!

I had a B5.5 Passat with the engine your channel don’t talk about 12 years and it was a brilliant car. I just done a MOT check and the last MOT it ever had, it had 225k miles on it. At present I got a Mk8 Golf and the build quality on that car is no where near as good as the B5.5 Passat.

I preferred my Passat 1.8T Sport 99T to my Corrado 2.0 16V 94M.

My 1998 1.8 20v bought new, is the reason why I will never own another Volkswagen. The car itself was ok, dull as ditchwater . The dealers were on another level for incompetence, I fell out with 3 in my area, including one that damaged the car, “ it must have been like it when it came in, sir “ it (insert swear word) wasn’t ! A truly terrible ownership experience, one of the most overrated cars, and brands ever . When I think of the great choice cars I had, and I swap a superb Citroen Xantia for a bloody Volkswagen Passat .

I never knew you could get them in petrol ?, must be very few made ? all the ones I have ever seen are the wrong type of fuel !
