you need to set your brakes as close to all the way off as you can get without backlashing the reel but still be able to launch the bait and punch the cover. you just have to practice your pitching and flipping while you try different settings.

@Jaygay13 Try this. Let enough line that would cover your longest pitch. Then take a piece of electrical tape and tape it onto your spool of line. Then reel the line back up into your reel. Now if you backlash it will only go a few feet. I don't recommend fishing like this but it's a great way to practice without fighting backlashes all the time.

So basically the method of flipping and pitching are the same except that when you're flipping the only thing you are physically doing differently (besides not bringing the wrist up as fast to cast as far) is that when you're pitching you hold the line with your hand to help control it? Is that the only difference? Someone please answer

@HATINTHEKAT Dosen"t matter. That is something that is determined by the fisherman and is taylored to the individual fisherman.

To everyone asking about tension on the control knobs. EVERYONE is different so what works for Denney, me or you will be different. Experiment and see what works for YOU. it takes ALOT of time to get proficient with this technique.

Sounds to me like your fighting the pitch to much and putting a little to much effort. Try adjusting your tension and brake to get longer pitches instead of whipping your poe tip up harder. helped me a lot. And you could also let your thumb just barely brush your line while it casting out, it will keep your spool from just taking off.

Can I do the pitching technique with an open spinner reel? Or does it work best with spinner bait reels?

when you're pitching, you want the brakes on, but the minimum amount of breaking power to avoid a backlash. My citica has 6 brakes, I always have 2 on, never more, never less. As far as the dial, you want it to be set so that it allows the jig to fall pretty fast. Fast enough that if you just drop the jig from the tip it will backlash. This is critical in getting distance with your pitches.
