“Thousand Pieces of Gold” tells the story of a young Chinese woman (Rosalind Chao) pressed into servitude in an 1880 mining town. Refusing to be exploited, she becomes a worker of endless resourcefulness and soon earns the respect, then the love, of a taciturn Civil War veteran (Chris Cooper). Ahead of its time in 1990, the film garnered extraordinary reviews from critics, some of whom compared director Nancy Kelly to John Ford.
