Ya in the books wood says, “because whichever Seeker catches the Snitch wins his team an extra hundred and fifty points, so they nearly always win.”

In the books he says that it ALMOST always let the team win.

In the books, Wood says that it awarded 150 points, so that team normally wins, but in the movies they just make it wins

In the book, i remember he gave the order to harry to catch the snitch after they reach somepoints so they could win.

So the snitch grants 150 points and ends the game but because the opposite team had more points than what his team had after he caught it, his team lost.

His team must be really bad to have been behind by more than 150 points.

In Order of the Pheonix (book) in the Gryffindor vs Hufflepuff game, Ginny catches the Snitch yet it is the Hufflepuff who win the Game.

He was probably trying to make it simpler for Harry.
He explains it better later in the books.

Nice to know facts:
1. The snitch memorizes the first person that touches it, and it's kind of a one-time-use item. The manufacterers only touch it with gloves, so when wood touches it with bare hands he actually renders it useless and they need a new one for the game.
2. Fred and George actually bet on this outcome of the QWC with cedrics father (i guess, not 100% sure tho), saying that krum will catch the snitch but Ireland will win the game, which they actually did by a 10 point advantage.

He was explaining it to a kid who didn’t even know what flying on a broom was, and at Hogwarts, catching the snitch basically means you win

In the books, Wood specified that the snitch catching team NEARLY ALWAYS win. He didn't say catching snitch meant instant victory. N I think Rowling purposely did that in the quidditch world cup final incase people misunderstood this detail.

Maybe the fact they are playing basically high school league, i would think the fact catching the snitch would ultimately win the game

Catching the snitch worths 150 wins the game, but the championship is won by the team wich has the most points overall.

the rules are simple. there are three types of balls, the normal one, the two that should be forbidden in a school that's why the twins take care of it, and the main character ball, this ball is yours Harry Potter.

I always thought quidditch kind of suck for the reason of the snitch ending the game. Especially if there isn't a set amount of time before the snitch is released. Because the game could last less then 10 minutes or be hours to days long. I'd hate to be watching the game and have it end in less then 10 minutes. Imagine being someone who is not well off paying for a ticket barley settled in your seat and the snitch is caught within 5 min.
