iPad mini 6 (2021) Artist Review: There are Screen Issues

Design update is good, screen downgrade is not. The screen is not as good as other iPads.

I like your "sloppy" style of painting/drawing. Styles like this teach me that it's OK to stop being so picky, to let go, and allow myself to actually enjoy the process of drawing/painting

Screen size should be 8.3 inches instead of 8.9. And I forgot to mention palm rejection is flawless with apps that allow only pen input for drawing.

Great review Teoh! Very interesting, I have the new mini and was not aware of the jelly effect yet. I just tested that on mine while scrolling and it is definitely a thing. I hope it can be fixed via software update.
However, I got this mini specifically as a portable sketchbook (for me it's the perfect size, since the other iPads feel too big for that) so at least for me this is not really a huge issue. But for others it might be, so if anyone out there is considering the iPad mini 6 be sure to take the jelly effect into account.

The Jelly Effect is caused by the screen technology's left to right refresh which happens one line at a time from top to bottom. On the previous iPad's the screen has always been orientated in Portrait mode. With the mini they've rotated the screen to Landscape so you don't see the same effect in this mode. In Portrait the screen is refreshing from top to bottom so the left side will refresh before the right side.

It’s unfortunate that none of the early reviews mentioned the jelly effect - even though it’s reported by a lot of independent sources. I’m very glad it was mentioned here, but this isn’t the first time the big tech guys have missed something like this.

I use iPad for drawing. Your review is the only review that matters to me. The Jelly effect and slippery screen turn me off so I think I skip this mini. You just save me some bucks, so thanks Teoh!

The jelly effect I can probably live with, but there are other display issues popping up like discoloration - if I'm keeping an iPad for 3 to 4 years I'm wanting the display to be decent 👍

Good overall review but two things: the screen is 8.3” not 8.9”, and it’s approximately 1.52:1 (3:2) not 4:3.

I’ve bought 12.9 2020 IPad Pro in January 2021 and I have no regrets! I do trust more the last solid model instead of buying fresh new one and being the one spending my own money being test subject for apple 🍏 💰
P.S. Oh, and I still own 9.7 2016 IPad Pro 😋

That jelly effect somewhat annoys me, it's actually giving me a bit of headache when I try to scroll fastly, I noticed this in my cousin's new ipad mini, so I can confirm

I finally decided to buy the ipad 9th gen for my daily art drawing. Because LCD and the old design is more reliable and very good. I can say that because I own an ipad air 2 for 7 years and i dont see any issue. Its so hardy.

8:30 you can buy screen protector that makes it feel more like paper rather than glass

Good review! I tested my Air 4 and it has zero issues with the screen.
