My grandkids have been dealing with this ! Every kid is failing.. can’t imagine why? So, instead of our kids actually learning math, they are learning nothing & failing miserably!! Sheesh!!

That’s common core is horrific!!! Had many meetings with teachers when my kids had to learn this way in elementary school. Most teachers hate this method also. Makes it far more complicated to solve simple problems. I showed my kids the RIGHT way to do it i never cared if the teachers wanted it done a certain way. And they can’t fail them for coming up with the RIGHT ANSWERS!

The first question is teaching kids to work with numbers they know (10), so that when more complex numbers are involved later on (multiples of 10), they can apply the same logic.

Most people memorize these in their heads, but if you show your work, it would likely be something like this:
7 + 7
7 + 3 = 10
7 - 3 = 4
10 + 4 = 14

or later,
170 + 160
100 + 100 = 200
70 + 30 = 100
60 - 30 = 30
200 + 100 + 30 = 330

I don't think it's overcomplicated. It's what a lot of people do in their heads anyways. Maybe the question is worded a little strangely. All answers are correct, but the question is asking, with the work shown, are they adding the numbers to get 10 before coming to the solution.

I’m a teacher and many teachers don’t even want to teach this. They make us. And it confuses most of the kids anyway when many of them still struggle with just adding the normal way.

Love that I homeschool. This kind of math has nothing to do with what math you need in life. They have taken out some of the best courses and added some crap to dumb down not only the children but parents as well! Good luck! God Bless.
