Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has been declared the winner of a highly disputed election, sparking widespread protests and international condemnation. Accusations of election rigging, cronyism, and economic mismanagement have intensified the country's turmoil. Economist Dany Bahar, Associate Professor of Practice of International and Public Affairs at Brown University's Watson Institute, discusses the dire economic conditions ordinary Venezuelans face, the mismanagement of the state oil sector, and the impact of US sanctions.

Socialism almost always leads to tyranny. We need depend on the state to take care of you, you must forfeit your rights to take care of yourself to allow the state to do it. Once that deal is signed, your guarantee to live a lower standard of living.

The most capable people have left Venezuela. Maybe the bots in the comment section should go live in Venezuela.

The rising interest rate can surely control inflation, but won't prevent erosion of the eroding purchasing power of the US dollar. I have learnt my lesson this time. The banks can't be making money off my money, while inflation eats into it. I have set aside 650k to invest in the stock market now, since that keeps up with inflation, but I don't know how to get started.

He lost me when he said that remittances are mainly in "kind" not money, and then continued saying that people are getting dollars from abroad.

Venezuelans need to fix it, not ignore or run from it. One way, or the other.

Dishonestly hides the effects of sanctions and blockades (and the moral and criminal consequences of them) by arguing that they are not the solely cause of the economical problems. Of course they are not.

I find it hard to believe that Venezuelans will just sit back and let their country be taken from them but perhaps they will. Are Venezuelans as brave as Ukrainians?

Will this be Juan Guaidó 2.0? Where Venezuela winds up with two leaders: one recognized and backed by the country's military [Maduro] and the other, powerless but backed by the U.S. and its friends

Those sanctions have a significant impact you can tell by the way he stutters it looks like he was caught of guard and was thinking about how to downplay sanctions

We need Maduro leaves Venezuela. No more dictators, represión and protesters in jail. No more corruption, trafficking drugs and Communism in America. People need to be free to eat whatever they want. There’s poverty and hunger everywhere in the country. He lost the election.

I just don't understand why people in a lot of these countries vote. Y'all know what the outcome will be. Once these leaders are in they never leave. He's going to stay in power for the rest of his life
