It's not a bird head, it's the injury from the bison, likely busted open his head with the horns. The bison could well be on its side, dead. It might be a commemorative painting thanking the man for taking one for the team to bring home this meal, and telling his story for generations to come.

The man clearly awaits the love of the bison, i mean look at him.
The bird likes watching, little pervs.

As to the erection, I recall seeing a video of a primitive tribe (probably Africa or possibly Amazonian) where natives still wore little in the way of clothing and protected their private parts by using a shield made of bark or wood. The shield looked like an erection and was held in place by twine. These "cave" drawing often depict the struggle between humans and animals and I think it is more likely a real experience than ceremonial.

I think thats a fair reading.
The birds head on the man might be a representation of death, the bird head being a vulture. Thats going out there a bit though.
The spear looks broken too.
Hell of a battle

Instead of a bird head, maybe his moth is agape?

A story does not have to be true to be a great story. We will probably never know what the artist is telling us, but like all great art, it allows us to imagine.

Around 20, 000 years ago the art work we find had significant change across the world. It went from being natural depicted animals and scenery to allegory archetype symbology of what they saw in the sky. The mythos of this story still lives on today in ritual orthos that everyone is familiar with. Bullfighting. They wound it with a spear then the bull charges the bull fighter with his red cape.

sounds like a scene from a Jean Auel book actually - a guy was killed by a bison in a mass hunt where spear throwers were used.

ancient PSA to not throw spears at bison when solo, the painting was sponsored by a bird cult

Maybe the other hunters found the two like this by following scavenging birds.

Many tribes gave credits to birds when they found cargasses especially during winter.

Yes, that is probably the best story of what took place to inspire the artist who very likely witnessed the whole incident.

This is the earliest depiction of shade thrown, basically saying “don’t be a bird-brained, hotshot on a hunt; you could end up dead”

Jk, I feel the errant line is being looked into a bit more than it should though. To me that’s the figures hip, so it might be a skinning knife. While birds can perch on tall grass, I like the concept that it’s a n atlatl. For the head; it could just be a comically large mouth screaming, but more realistically it might be a mask or head wear worn during a hunt. Either way I think the whole thing is trying to stress that animals can take a long time to die and are still dangerous until their last breath.

These french cave paintings have an incredible story as well. I don't have the time to bother looking it up so some of the smaller details might be off, but it was discovered by some young men (friends) during the time that France was occupied by the Nazi regime. The young men saw the significance of this discovery and took turns guarding it from the Nazis until the war was over, when it was finally able to be studied. The story made my heart happy when i first heard it. These young men preserved so much important art.

Bird on stick could be a totem, a banner. Imagery of message on a staff is still practiced today and most likely prehistory.

Those aren't intestines. Ever seen them up close? Those things have balls of steel.

Do you see the bird on the stick as a spear thrower like hieroglyphics or pictographic to represent Tool that makes sticks fly (like a bird)

The erection also happens with men who died in mining accidents... So my guess is definitely trauma. Don't know if it happens under less traumatic circumstances ? Maybe a doctor can answer that question.

Obviously he is a space alien, chariots of the gods and all that.

What if the bison also lays dead and flat on the ground with the man, with those drawn coil lines under his belly representing intestines, bison has to be dead from such a wound, and that stork like bird with long legs jus casually watching, or maybe is some sort of scavenger bird

I think it had some sort of spiritual or religious significance. Possibly the figure is a sacrificial offering to ensure the clan/tribes bounty. An offering to the animal spirits to ensure successful hunts and the tribe’s survival.
