As someone who works in cancer research/clinical trials and knows how tightly regulated research and production of medication is, it is beyond me how the FDA seemingly looks the other way and can't be bothered to regulate supplements

It’s disturbing to me how many parents that give their children melatonin on a regular basis. I was at the store the other day and a young mother was essentially‘threatening’ her child that they would get melatonin that night if they didn’t calm down. I was mortified. And I’ve heard young parents talk about using melatonin for getting their children to sleep. Appalling and scary. What kind of long term issues are these kids looking at for being given melatonin regularly as a child.

I took melatonin after my father died. It was so necessary to maintain some semblance of normalcy. I think I was taking 10mg, which was the dosage on my bottle. I went to the doctor, and they had me go down to 3mg. It's crazy that this is like a free for all. I'm glad I tapered down and didn't end up relying on it.

Thank you so much Dr. Dray! This is such an important issue. I’ve seen Melatonin often ordered and recommended in psych to clients with sleep complaints. Of course sleep studies are often recommended but many clients neglect this recommendation. Overtime melatonin can inversely effect serotonin and lead to depression. It’s scary that these supplements are way over the recommended dose. There’s many clients that are taking max doses so that must mean they may be actually taking very large amounts. I hope there’s more done about this. It’s not fair to the public. Thanks for informing your viewers

I've suffered from poor sleep for the past 15+ years. I tried various doses and brands of melatonin, but every single time experienced terrible nightmares.

I take them once in a while. My gummies have 3 mg of melatonin. I’d heard of the negatives of taking these. I only use them if needed but they help so much by giving me a deep sleep because I wake up easily.

I take melatonin, but I consider it as a medication in my case, as it is a prescription: Circadin. I started taking it because upon testing I discovered my levels of melatonin are way bellow the normal range. I am also doing other life style changes to help the body produce melatonin naturally, but in the meantime the melatonin is being helpful.

Thank you for sharing your medical knowledge! As a Licensed Veterinary Technician, a lot of diseases are very similar between animals and humans (some are very different). Many medications prescribed for people are also used to treat animals. I appreciate all your hard work! Many blessings!💖💖💖

Yes, I occasionally would give my four year old melatonin (tired teddies). I’m not going to do this any more😮

Per usual, thank you, Dr. Dray for such important information. Thanks to you, I've learned the importance of a proper sleep "environment"--clean bedding, sleep mask, humidifier, etc. I actually enjoy the process of getting ready for bed because I know the positive results will follow. I will say that this video is especially important at this moment because I'm reading about all of these diabetes drugs being used to assist weight loss, instead of addressing the issue at hand. In short, a pill or a gummy shouldn't be the solution.

Absolutely important information to heed before consuming unstandardized supplements. At the same time, unfortunately, many prescription medications don't fare any better and sometimes worse in regards to side effects. Just be informed before picking your poison, so to speak.

Such good info and not just on the melatonin. If you have to push your health care providers for the reason(s) for your symptoms, do that. You are your own best advocate. If you feel you have problems advocating for yourself, bring a willing friend or family member.

I go through periods of taking melatonin when my sleep is poor. Always gives me brain fog and fatigue the next day, thus contributing to a low mood/lethargy. Very informative vid and I’m breaking up with my melatonin!

As a peds RN, I’ve seen for decades parents that give their child “the sleepy juice” aka Benadryl for decades, and not necessarily bc the child is experiencing insomnia, but bc it’s Saturday night and it’s party time. 🎉
