Too Many Bones comes loaded for bear by breaking into a new genre: the dice-builder RPG. This game takes everything you think you know about dice-rolling and turns it on its head. Dripping with strategy, this fantasy-based RPG puts you in the skin of a new race and takes you on an adventure to the northern territories to root out and defeat growing enemy forces and of course the infamous "baddie" responsible.

Team up or go it alone in a 1-4 player Coop or Solo play campaign. With over 100+ unique skill dice and 4-7 classes to choose from, every battle is its own mini challenge to figure out. Your adventure will consist of 8-12 battles before you reach your final destination and face off against one of a number of possible kingpins in order to win. Along the way, you will be faced with storyline decisions that will quickly have you weighing risk/reward, odds, and logic - with dice woven into every aspect! Your party will also be faced with other decisions: when to rest, when to explore, or even which fights to pursue! The Encounter cards offer fun plot twists and some comic relief, all while setting the stage for your next battle. - From BGG

Have wanted this for so long and finally pulled the trigger. Count me in the exception to the rule for also getting everything available and in stock as well as pre-ordering the magnificently overproduced box to hold it all. Keep up the great work!

I cannot wait to teach this. I really think that some of the things that you wanted an upgrade to (combat mat, terrain, beginning day story) are out there in undertow/40 Days/AoT. The key to this game is that each gearloc is different and that you really have to learn a gearloc and use that gearloc a couple times to see the way they can really shine. Also, gearlocs change their advantage based on the number of gearlocs. So, for example, I play patches as more of a healer at a 1-2 player count, but move more towards buffing at 3-4 gearlocs. I love that bones add those backup plans and that sometimes, I am purposefully rerolling defense dice just to fail to get bones to setup for a backup plan. This game is tough though because losing a battle hurts, but it can chain and losing a couple in succession REALLY sets you back. It's not impossible, and it has mitigation but too much failure is definitely not what you want. I think the goal is to make you play again and learn the gearloc more and try different combinations.

This game is not for everyone and requires a bit to learn BUT with a good teacher and someone to help you learn it, I think a lot of the frustrations that you would have that may make you sell your copy because you got so frustrated (extreme example I'm sure :) ) could be warded away. There are plenty of gearlocs to accommodate playstyles, theme, and tactics. This one of my top 5 of all time easy. It was #1 for a long time but there are a couple that have matched it so now its like I have a top game, but 3 games, and 2nd is really 4th. Looking forward to helping you give this another go! Also, the gearlocs sport some amazing pants that are functional and comfortable for sleeping and killing with equal enjoyment!

There is a funny thing in the title of this game, In russian(i'm russian) bone is "кость", and that means "dice" as well.

I saw this video a few months ago and based on this I went and bought the base game and then went back and immediately bought all that was currently available for it! I love it, the production quality is unbelievable and the gameplay, especially with the Age of Tyranny campaign expansion! Thanks for covering this guys, but my bank account hates you!!! 😂

One of the best review of Too Many Bones, especially the final "advice" part

Here's a 2020 price update for those curious. On the Chip Theory website the base game is $130 and the Undertow "affordable" entry point is $90. Shipping is $10. Expansion characters are $25 each or $90 for a 4-pack. All-in-all a very risky purchase no matter what option you choose. And with people saying the base game isn't very replayable, you have to factor expansion packs into either base game price. I've been trying to decide for months and this pricetag keeps me away so far.

I love your right for you / wrong for you format. Quickly diving into the topics, providing your opinion on your criteria is very helpful.
Just one small complaint on this video: the background music is a little bit of a distraction.... rather loud and it flutters me 😉

My favorite thematic game. I normally prefer Euros, but this one does it for me.

Really love this game, and have pretty much all of it and even with the price tag I am under $10 spent per hour played ( yeah I am a weird one and keep track of that.) One thing I will say adding in the 40 days expansion ( campaign) adds in several new day 1-3 days which really helps and I wish that was with the base game, .

Quackalope, much of your shelf and my shelf is identical. Too Many Bones, KDM, Bunny Kingdom, 7th, Continent, Middara. We would get along very well.

Very good one format and video, really help me out ! Id' love to see another one on Too Many Bones diving into the loads of expansions there is, and espacially another one on the Campaign perspective, since Undertow/Unbreakable and Age of Tyranny, and also housemade rulling base game kinda compete for it, and it's very hard to have an idea of the campaign feeling with this game, balanced it with the price tag etc, for what to buy first.
I wanna buy it for that purposes, very eager to grab it and with expansions (price is the only deterrent), any info on that will be much appreciated. Thanks for all, and just a note : music is a bit loud and strange in this.

I like how Jesse said "Or if you're like me, you start out by getting everything", only to have Jan pat him on the back and say "You are the exception to the rule, buddy!" :) I'm the exception too, I guess because I ordered everything they had in stock when I decided to go for it :) But I blame you, personally, for still not being able to get Ghillie or Nugget. I'm also looking forward to the new Splice expansion and new characters releasing soon.
