I've been reselling for 3/4 years now, I'd have loved to have given it a go full time but we just couldn't risk sacrificing my salary. So my wife made the decision to quit her teaching role and give it a go helping me out! We made it from Xmas last year to September this year... We loved it. But we jumped at it too early, we needed more "just in case" savings to help out with any mistakes along the way. We were one of the first on whatnot, it was going great but then our supplier fell through, and we stupidly started putting our eBay stock onto there to tide us over. We went from a store of 800 on eBay, to 150. And we just didn't have the savings to get the store back to where we needed it. Similar to you, we have two young kids. So, my wife's gone back to work in school, with the aim to build the business back up over the next 6 months/year before going again. All a learning curve I suppose haha

Apologies for the long comment 😂

I can completely relate to your experience, Nick. I left my job in the motor trade last year after 25 years to pursue this full-time. For years, I had been doing quite well part-time selling rare RS Cosworth parts, which I sourced during my time working at Ford. Transitioning into this full-time has been a fascinating journey.

Now, I'm enjoying the opportunity to explore and learn about what other items sell well beyond car parts. One thing I’ve realized is that space and solid organizational skills are absolutely essential, especially depending on the variety of items you’re dealing with.

So far, I’m really enjoying the work, although it can feel a bit isolating at times. And yes, listing is without a doubt the most tedious part of the process! Keep up the great work—it’s rewarding to see the progress and growth.

I completely agree with you over KPIs. My companies were unattainable so demotivating from the very start.

2:03 you described my life right now. Retail Manager here, it’s exhausting! I’m trying to build up reselling so I can leave once my kids have finished uni. I have a four year plan 😂

Hey Nick, great video, thanks for the honest assessment of the reseller life. I started reselling last year, selling lego and playmobil and stuff like that and I felt like it was going well, I was turning over a lot of stock but I wasn't organised enough and would be working 'till the early hours every morning then getting up at 6.30am to go to my regular job. I burnt out pretty quickly but I was determined not to just jack in the reselling. I've started up again this month having taken some time to think about how to do it more sustainably and my sales are starting to come through. I'm a single dad of 2 and I would love to think that I could get to the stage where I could do reselling full time, even if just for a few years until the kids are more self sufficient. Space to store items and getting the time to source stock at this time of year seem to be the limiting factors. I am constantly looking for some reliable wholesale contacts and I wondered whether you would consider these clothes bundle wholesalers who advertise on FB and elsewhere as a useful source of stock or not?

:33 That unmistakable Gateway computer box! I was related to the founder Ted Waite through his ex-wife. Neat company, too bad they didn’t make it.

I’m a part time reseller and have been for the past 6 months and I’m dreading going back to work after the new year I hate my factory worker job. They have no respect for any of us with very little money for the effort you put in. Next year my aim is to grow my eBay shop so hopefully I can give up work for good.

Working in retail is shit and shit money for the hours you have to put in. I do feel your pain, believe me. Working for yourself just gives your life back and in the direction you want to go. Good luck with it all.

I would really like to caution resellers going forward as the economic situation is so bleak and I think this time next year its going to be really tough to keep this going like it has been. I know a lot of people think that people will buy more stuff second hand but I think this is a little naïve. People will only spend on essential items with a lot already that are stopping buying even the essentials. I know a few people in IT who have already been laid off and a lot of small businesses already struggling. I feel with the huge layoffs coming like we are already seeing in germany and europe that even making a very modest income will be hard for many. The budget has not helped this situation but it was already desperate before this. So don't beat yourself up if things don't go so well in the next few years.
