Evolving mid battle is another refrence to the anime, as Pokemon Yellow was practically made for the anime.

Evolution mid battle would actually be a great feature. It could get you a much needed boost during hard battles when you meet the requirements, and it would be very anime if your Pokemon evolves during major fights in the plot, like if your starter levels up enough right before your rival lets out their starter.

I'd assume it released sometime after or during it literally says it on the title screen from the creators
