I rescued a puppy that had been abandoned along with her mom. The mother dog was caught by the dog catcher pretty easily. Many people would chase the puppy terrifying her but their intentions were good. I took a passive approach, spending 2 hours a day for 2 weeks (1hr in the morning and 1 in the evening) sitting in the ditch where she lived, to get this puppy to trust me. Finally, she was my dog but had lots of anxiety. My mom said she was a cowardly dog. Of course, I defended my dog with the same point you are making saying she was brave because despite being abandoned by humans and having her mother taken from her by humans, she was still willing to trust us and try to live life like a regular dog. BTW everyone at the vets office loved her gentleness. She was good with cats, children, chickens, and everything else (except the honeybees didn't like her scent.)
