Qual was such a monster. He w0ke up after 80 years and already started to counter spells that were made to deal with his Zoltraak. Explains a lot why they had to seal him instead of trying to take him out

I'm only now noticing that Qual was doing the barrage of attacks to poke at the defense capabilities, and as soon as he notices one breaks he tries to overpower the defense.

I love the moment at 0:20, Qual notices that the barrier can break if enough force is used, then proceeds to blast fern with a massive zoltraak. Man was such a menace that even the hero party had to flee

I like how qual embodies the demon’s mastery of one singular magic, he doesn’t just cast it he plays with his spells as if they were a symphony.

This was the moment I knew this series will be exceptional, one minute fight with this level of animation.

Sealed for 80 years so that humanity could put their heads together to develop something that would buy them a 10-second opening when the fight resumed. Qual was formidable.

I had an interesting realization from one of the later episodes. One of the demons serving under Aura calls the "ordinary offensive magic" version of Zoltraak not the same spell, and that demonkind had conquered Zoltraak ages ago. The spell that Frieren and humankind developed is a modified version of Zoltraak tuned for killing demons. Qual probably noticed this when it was cast against him, and I think that lends a deeper meaning to "Frieren... My spell...". He wasn't just killed with his own spell, but a version that has been twisted against his own original design.

The fact that Himmel's party was capable of both survive an onslaught of instant-death spells AND seal Qual is unbelievable, they were literally built different 😂

So this scene is pretty amazing and ACTUALLY show how terrifying Qual really is:
In his first attack he learns that:
1 - Magic Barriers are Really strong against his spell
2 -How they work, by dispersing the magic through the corners,
3- and the weakness of the spell, That it consumes too much mana.
He counters by trying to overwhelm the opponent with a bunch of spells because the control of a high-consumption magic such as shields might not be very maneuverable.

After noticing that he Indeed can break through the shields that Fern put up with sheer brute-force he instantly liberate a high attack to overpower Fern.

This was in the first 2 min since he was unsealed btw.

Frieren simply says "Protect me" and leaves Fern to it while she prepares her spell. Complete confidence in Ferns abilities and her own teaching, Fern was lucky to end up with Frieren.

To me it looks like Qual is almost dancing to the music when casting that barrage attack and I love it.

Random thought: in later fights Fern uses barrages of combat magic to overwhelm defensive spells, and I like to imagine she adapted some of that from seeing how Qual fought her.

I really love how Frieren had been stressing learning history and Fern had been kind of fighting against the idea, and then this battle happens and suddenly Fern understands exactly why learning the history is so important.

And, best of all, the show doesn't spell it out for you at all. It's something you get to discover for yourself.

I really love when shows and movies don't hold you hand through everything.

Qual was so impressive that he copied the shield spell from nothing more than just watching it. He immediately understood the cost of a spell like that, too. He wasn’t just some guy, he was one of the strongest mages probably!
