Sunday July 30th, 2006 - ECW returns to pay-per-view! Heat Wave 2006, live from the Stabler Arena in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania!

Going into the event, three huge matches have dominated ECW in recent weeks, perhaps none more important than the ECW World Championship match between Rob Van Dam and the ECW Television Champion, CM Punk. Originally allies within the new ECW, recent events - including an apparent “private meeting” between Punk and “The Chief of ECW” Paul Heyman - have led to suspicion and doubt around the integrity of CM Punk. A man proud of his own strong belief system, CM Punk took the questions personally, and “washed his hands” of the ECW Originals. While he’s made it clear that he has no intention of taking up The Hustle on their offer of a place in the “Revolution”, the only real answers will come in the Main Event of Heat Wave 2006.

Another rivalry which will come to ahead at Heat Wave will be that between “The King of Pro-Wrestling” Steve Corino, and the man he dubbed “The King of The Cockroaches”, Terry Funk. Since returning to ECW, saving Tommy Dreamer from an attack from Corino’s Extreme Horsemen, Funk has been looking to face Corino in a one on one match. Steve Corino initially refused, stating “beating you wouldn’t just make you look bad… it’d make me look bad”. Eventually he came round to the idea, claiming that Funk was practically “begging” to be put out of his misery. Annoyed at being lumped in with the rest of the “ECW Originals”, Corino sees Heat Wave as the chance to set himself apart, and take out one of the most iconic figures in ECW history.

Despite the personal aspects of the above matches, no match arguably has more riding on it than Paul Heyman vs. Tommy Dreamer. Former allies, it has been said that these two men are the sole reason that ECW was resurrected earlier this year. Having fought to bring back the company they loved, the revelation that Paul Heyman was looking to faze out the Originals, including Tommy Dreamer, was a dagger in the chest of the “Heart & Soul of ECW”. Behind the group of New Breed talent who seemed hell-bent on ending the careers of Dreamer and his contemporaries, Paul Heyman has tried to justify his betrayal as being what is best for the future of ECW. His vision of the “New ECW” didn’t include the likes of Sandman and Tommy Dreamer in prominent positions, the former having his career ended at the hands of Heyman’s Hustle’s Sonny Siaki.

Shockingly, just two weeks before Heat Wave, Paul Heyman accepted Tommy Dreamer’s challenge to a match at the event, but added a huge stipulation to the contest. Now the most important fight of Dreamer’s career, if he is unable to pick up the win over Heyman, he is fired from ECW… and his wrestling career is over!

Also at Heat Wave, Masato Tanaka returns to ECW, going one on one with fellow FMW alumni Mammoth Sasaki. The two Japanese stars will bring their style of wrestling to Extreme Championship Wrestling, in a huge face off between two competitors who know each other well. Likewise, two sides of the coin within the “New Breed” of ECW talent will face off, as The Hustle’s Low-Ki takes on Brent Albright. “The Warrior” and “The Shooter” both have excellent records since ECW’s return, and will be one of the few matches that is expected to be contained to the ring.

That isn’t all we will see of The Hustle at Heat Wave however, as Homicide is set to go to war with the “Homicid-al, Genocidal, Suicidal, Death-Defying” Sabu. Involved in many physical encounters over the first 6 months of ECW CyberSlam, their first singles match will surely see blood shed and bodies broken, as they hold nothing back in the battle between The Hustle and The Originals. A second title match will also take place on the evening, as The Havana Pitbulls make their first ECW World Tag Team Championships defence, against Johnny Kashmere & Trent Acid. Allies of the Originals, and impressive throughout their time in ECW, Kashmere & Acid will look to take the titles from Ricky Reyes & Rocky Romero. Like everybody else involved in the event however, they will be aware that in the “New ECW”, competition is more fierce than ever, and they will have to “Bring The Heat”… at Heat Wave 2006!
