My teacher does this thing where she purposely omits useful information before assigning homework so she can teach it to us after we all cry because we don't know how to do it.

to do it without the calculator just change it into exponential form so it would be 2^x = 8, then figure out what exponent would make 2 8, in this case its 3. 2*2*2 = 8
