How Did LILY REALLY Feel About Snape? - Harry Potter Theory

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we’re discussing how exactly Harry Potter's mum, Lily Potter, felt about the divisive—yet devoted—character of Professor Severus Snape.

Since the release of The Deathly Hallows, it has become common knowledge—for those of us interested in Harry Potter lore—that the once reviled Severus Snape had actually lived nearly his entire life in servitude to his feelings for Lily Potter. From the time that he was a boy growing up in the industrial town of Cokeworth, England and met a neighbourhood girl called Lily Evans, all the way to his dying breath, Snape’s actions in life were almost entirely motivated by his love for her. The most poignant passage describing Severus Snape's love for Lily Potter can be found in that final instalment of the series in the chapter titled The Prince's Tale, for it is here where Harry dives into Snape's memories and uncovers the depth of Snape's feelings for his mum. In one particular memory, Snape reveals to Dumbledore that his Patronus is a doe, the same as Lily's, symbolising his enduring love for her. When Dumbledore asks, “After all this time?”, Snape simply replies, “Always.” This single word encapsulates Snape's unwavering love for Lily, even after her death.

He was abused by his father and his meeting with his first friends. The first positive thing in his life. He helped her getting to know about the wizarding world.
But once Snape got more friendly with Death Eaters and the dark arts. He chosed his way she chose her way the difference between them parted them.

She did love him. As a brother and friend. But Snape ruined that himself.

Being friend zoned by a person you think you're in love with is one of worst feelings in the world. I learned that the hard way. Never again.

Snape’s patronus is a doe because of Lily, Lily’s patronus is a doe because wasn’t James’ patronus a stag like his animagus form? your patronus can change based on feelings towards another person, Tonk’s patronus changed to a wolf because of Remus …. So Snape’s patronus was a doe because of long way round … James. Was Lily’s always a doe, did it change when she grew to love James, would Snape’s change if Lily’s changed?

Lily probably never loved Snape the way he loved her. She probably did love him as a friend and perhaps as a brother.

There is nothing not to agree about. This is a simple truth- Snape loved Lily in a romantic way but Lily loved him in a friendly way until he used the M word. She also said that even if she forgave him it wouldn't matter, because he still thinks this way about MB witches and wizards like her.

I think by the end she would have felt deeply conflicted about Severus but I believe she would have still had some love for him because of their childhood.

I think Snape loved his memory of Lily: the kind girl who was nice to him during his crappy childhood. If he could’ve kept her that way forever? I believe he would’ve done it.

I believe it was obsession tbh. He told the dark lord to just spare Lily and not her family. If he truly loved her he would have treated Harry better no matter who his father was. He should have wanted her to be happy and she wouldn’t have been if her son was killed. Just my opinion though

I think that if Snape had gotten the resurrection stone and called Lily’s spirit, while she might have thanked him for protecting Harry, I don’t think she would have ever forgiven him for how he treated her son and other children. She probably would have also brought up their argument from childhood in that; it was fine until he was directly affected, and that he hasn’t really grown past that.

When he called her a mudblood it shows that this was always in the back of his mind. After being called such a foul name you could never truly forgive them. I imagine she put him in her past.

I do feel for Snape. Being in love with another mans woman is a very sad and painful place to be. A friend so close you would gladly give your life for theirs but never could truly show the depth of the love in your heart.

It was a toxic friendship. She tried to chance him and his interest in dark arts, despite the fact that studying dark arts cant be condemned. Its just magic...
She started to get close to the people who abused Snape. Thats a terrible friend.
He called her a slur, she could not forgive him. He drifted to the dark side, despite lily being their "enemy". Their friendship was fragile and in a way both did not care about the others feeling.

I think people often overlook a crucial fact: Lily has betrayed Snape. I know! I know!! "Nuh-uh! She's the embodiment of blah, blah..." She KNEW that The Marauders tortured Snape. She knew it for years. She, likely, also knew about wolf boy too; who was used in a deadly prank against Snape. So, I think jumping on Snape's neck here is too much. It seems to me that Harry's parents were not good people; they were loving, but not really good. Were they better than Voldemort? Probably, but Voldy threatens their very existence, so, naturally, they'll be viewed as objectively better. Snape was ultimately betrayed by every single person.

I think JK Rowling have said that Lilly might have been with him, if not for him going down a dark path. Would make for an interesting alternative timeline.

there’s love and there’s being in love…she loved him, but wasn’t in love with him.

he knew that he could never be with her, she knew that he cared about her as more than a friend but made it clear that he was loved by her but not as a husband or lover. he was a brother to her, nothing more.

When it comes down to it, Snape was prejudice towards muggle-borns and viewed them beneath him. "Mudblood" never would have "slipped out" if he didn't actually feel that way towards them, meaning he was making a conscious effort not to be prejudice around Lily because he had feelings for her (you wouldn't let the N word "slip out" unless you held actual prejudice towards black people), so she was the exception in his eyes, which just makes him a hypocrite. He also thinks lowly of muggles as well, as evident in when Lily was expressing concern over her sister's opinion of her and Snape said "who cares what she thinks, she's just a muggle." The fact that he thought she would be impressed with him joining the Death Eaters (who promote blood purity and actively hunt down muggleborns) when she was a muggleborn shows just how warped his mind was.

Lily did love Snape, but she loved him as a childhood friend. Much the same way that Harry, Ron and Hermoine love each other as friends.

a friend who went on to not just date but to marry my bully would not even be worthy of my friendship, never mind my devotion. 25 years after school and I still have occasional nightmares about that monster.

''You have your mother's eyes'', such a sad last moment for a pretty complicated character, who though cold at times, genuinely did love Lily.
