This Queen’s Private Secretary Was SLAUGHTERED And Stabbed 57 Times…

One of the most iconic figures of the 16th century was Mary Queen of Scots. She was also at times the Queen of France through marriage, but she would have a turbulent life in which she would later be imprisoned by Elizabeth I, and she made her way to the executioner’s block inside of Fotheringhay Castle. Mary’s love life was tumultuous and a source of much debate, but one of the most bloody and shocking events that she witnessed was the horrific murder of her privat secretary, David Rizzio. Inside of the Palace of Holyroodhouse, a group of rebels and murderers stabbed him 57 times in his body, but the murder would signal the downfall of Mary Queen of Scots’ marriage to Lord Darnley. It was a murder performed out of jealousy, but it was one that cast a dark shadow over the throne of Scotland.

Clearly even though she was QUEEN she had absolutely zero power and not a single person respected her. So in other words being Queen meant nothing to these people. She wasn't even a person to them.

This is the event that changed my perspective on Mary, Queen of Scots.

Rizzio was a valued member of Mary's court and he respected Mary and Mary respected him in return. And considering the speed and amount Mary was losing support and trust in the court, Mary appreciated Rizzio's loyalty more than necessary for a queen. But I doubt their relationship was anything beyond friendly.

But Henry was jealous of him. So, in simpler words, he and his 'supporters' planned Rizzio's assasination and to prove *a very special point* to Mary, they killed Rizzio in front of her, making her feel completely helpless. She couldn't do anything for Rizzio. But after a few months of staying separated, Mary *had to* forgive Henry because 1) they needed an heir, 2) divorce was out of discussion.

And years later, Henry himself was assasinated and Mary married the man who was the #1 suspect in Henry's murder. It seems clear to me. James Hepburn probably never forced Mary to marry him, never threatened her and probably never hurt her as well. It was him AND Mary who planned Henry's murder together.

Mary was a lot of things. She was smart, charismatic, elegant, beautiful, determined and brave and more. But, she was a terrible, *terrible* strategist. It is vastly believed she indeed took part in the failed plot to assasinate Elizabeth. And Elizabeth only didn't want to execute Mary because Mary wasn't her subject. Monarchs believed in divine right to rule so a queen "chosen by God" executing another queen who was "chosen by God" would have had dire consequences.

It also makes it easier to understand why James VI & I didn't care about his own mother let alone try and help her. He believed his mother was the killer of his father. Of course there are other reasons as well (Mary being Catholic and James being Protestant, James not wanting to face Elizabeth's ire, his court pretty much manipulating him his whole life about Mary...) but I believe Rizzio's murder changed the trajectory of Mary's life and was the start of her tragic end.

Mary made some very bad decisions but I believe she led through her heart ♥ unlike her cousin, Elizabeth I. Tragic.
