I see a setup where a mixer is connected to a audio interface to computer for live stream. what is the purpose of the audio interface in this setup? i thought the purpose of audio interface is to convert analog to digital.

One use case that you forgot to mention that can help people decide is if you want to have a bunch of different instruments and inputs, but you don't need to record them all at the same time. Buying a mixer, plugging everything in and then recording. What you need is easier and cheaper than buying a udio interface with lots of inputs. I think in the reality an audio interface with lots of inputs is helpful when you're trying to record multitracks simultaneously for multiple instruments. If you're doing what at a time recording but just wants everything plugged in so you don't have to plug in and out. Then a mixer works fine
