I never saw the movie as creepy but I can see how.
The scene where the hobo was controlling the Scrooge puppet to tease the hero boy was hilarious to me as a kid.

Here's my theory: hero boy tearing his robe and the marbles going everywhere is a metaphor for him losing his marbles. It might mean he has schizophrenia. (IDK just a theory)
