(he did not do it on purpose, he was late due to traffic, although if he really wanted to be on time, he would have departed sooner, so while not intentional, it's still his fault)
and yeah, he was more than 2.5 minutes late, Kovalev just waited for him for a while and even after that when the officials told him, he started the clock...

so basically Carlsen was something like 5 minutes late for a 3 minute blitz and still won

Coming late to a game on purpose as a habit/psychological tool is quite obnoxious indeed. Maybe if everyone treated it the way vishy did, Karpov would've got the memo and knocked it off. Or maybe the zero tolerance thing would've been introduced faster lol. Thanks for that BTW, anatoly hahaha
