The American flag is undoubtedly our country's most popular symbol. But according to flag experts, it wasn’t until after the Civil War that our obsession with the Stars and Stripes truly took off.

We are a large, diverse country, our residents are from everywhere in the world. We are spaced far apart from each other & have many cultures here, the flag unites us no matter how much distance or cultural differences we have. Also, as memorialized in the Star-Spangled Banner, our flag being ok is a sign to us that we will be okay❤️🇺🇸

It's very, very strange to see an obsession with a flag, whether it be america or not. It is a symbol for the country, just like every flag in the world, but we have to get off of the symbol worship rather than doing what's right for your country, for your people. It's something that is permanently imprinted on us culturally, but makes no sense. Acting as if this undying respect for said fabric is being patriot is ludicrous. In fact, it is still common practice that the most respectful way to get rid of a worn flag is burning, which in itself is dangerous to do. Millions of flags worldwide are created every year. They are basically the same as a t shirt, but people have focused on it being some kind of idol. It's often the far right, extremely uneducated rural Americans that actually care about it to fervor. It's often used by the right to be some sort of litmus test to see if you are a "real" American. The pledge of allegiance is probably the most cult-like practice we still take part in.

At the end of the day, it all comes down to one truth that many people do not understand. Worship of an American flag is NOT what makes you a patriot, it is NOT what makes you a good American. What you do for your community is what determines that.
