Your Voice Matters Now
We prepared to lobby our Senators with two inspiring Jewish role models. Rabbi David Saperstein and Rep. Jamie Raskin are leaders who champion the inseparable goals of preserving democracy and restoring a safe, healthy climate. At this briefing, we heard from these amazing speakers and then met with Jews from our states to plan how we will advocate for climate solutions during Pre-Tisha B’av Virtual Lobby Day.
Rabbi David Saperstein was designated by Newsweek Magazine as the most influential rabbi in America and by the Washington Post as the “quintessential religious lobbyist on Capitol Hill.” He directed the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism for 40 years, was the United States Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom, and taught seminars on church–state law and on comparative Jewish and American law at Georgetown University Law Center. He is co-author of "Jewish Dimensions of Social Justice: Tough Moral Choices for our Times." Rabbi Saperstein was a founding board member of the Coalition on the Environment and Jewish Life and currently serves on the Advisory Board of Dayenu.
A fourth-term Member of the House of Representatives, Rep. Jamie Raskin (MD-D) became a familiar face to all Americans when he was the lead impeachment manager in the second impeachment trial of former president Donald Trump and served on the Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol. He is currently the ranking Member of the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability. Prior to his time in Congress, Raskin was a three-term State Senator in Maryland and a professor of constitutional law at American University’s Washington College of Law. He has authored several books, including "Overruling Democracy: The Supreme Court versus the American People," and "Unthinkable: Trauma, Truth and the Trials of American Democracy."
