"we actually don't need your skillset at all, this interview was essentially over the moment you walked in"

@Pirate Software - I tried this question on a job interview for an executive position last week. The panel of interviewers spent the next 5 minutes of the interview telling me why I was the perfect person for this job and mentioned great points that I hadn't even considered. I took a chance and it worked. THANK YOU!

"This interview was more of a meet-the-quota of interviewees for the HR department, but we do appreciate your time."

My go-to question is to ask people how long they’ve worked with the company, and then to ask them what about that experience made them stay. It can be interesting hearing what people think is the best aspects of their jobs, especially if those aspects don’t align with what you’re looking for

Did this for my job interview. Or at least "if you hired me what would i be doing day 1?"

Got a call the very next day. First programming interview and first job offer. Best decision i ever made to take this advice. Thankyou!

I asked, “if you were to hire me right now, where would my skill set be most useful in the company?”

Got the response of, “you actually have been a very ideal candidate for our offsite support officer, but the hours conflict with your education schedule that you mentioned, we do appreciate you coming in, and after some further reviewing, we hope to have you in for the secondary interview”

Got a second interview but was not what they were looking for for the job I applied for.

Best last question i have always asked is ‘do you have any reservations about me’ this is perfect as you can address any doubts they may have. Its incredibly effective

Sounds good. Another great question a headhunter once told me to ask that actually helped me landing that job is: "Why don't you tell me why you think this company is a good employer?". It really makes them think about the positive aspects of their jobs and makes a connection between you and positive thoughts.

One of my favorite questions to ask is "what is your favorite project or feature you worked on within the company" gets them talking about something they enjoyed, making them enjoy me more.

This is a pretty good question that is similar to my own. The question I have always asked in the middle of interviews is "What challenge or problem are you trying to solve by hiring for this position?"

Most job descriptions are vague and looking for skill sets. Ultimately there is a project or a gap that has a need for those skills which is what they are really hiring for. Talking about the project or the problem turns you from a candidate into a consultant.

Now you are counter interviewing them and identifying what you are about to get yourself into; ex. replacing someone who left, growing into a team, filling knowledge gaps, etc.

80% of the time I get a second call or a job offer after that.
