Tommen was actually doing a pretty good job at deflecting the High Sparrow's BS imo, it was only until the Sparrow sent his guards back and signaled Tommen to do the same that he let himself get manipulated. I think if Tommen had wise and powerful advisers like Tywin and Tyrion to train him, he would've had both the ruthlessness and wit needed to prevent someone like the High Sparrow from taking power and manipulating him like this.

I’ve always liked this interaction. The High Sparrow of the show was reduced to a misogynist gaybasher to pander to the audience, but this conversation shows that some of his book characteristics did come through intact.

Nothing he says is factually untrue: Cersei is a devious lying harridan, but her one redeeming quality is that she loves her children. It’s not even clear his intent is to specifically manipulate Tommen, rather than getting the entire upper class as a whole to straighten out and set a better example for the small folk.

Poor Tommen. Not only did he lose his first love but he also commited suicide. Then died again in 1917. He's kind of like Sean Bean, he's so nice but the writers just like killing him.

"Confront" is a decidedly euphemistic term in this case. - "He throws cotton wools at him" is more accurate.

Tommen is not a fool. He is just trying to do this peacefully and he was raised to believe in the Gods even though his family knows its all bullshit.

If you listen carefully he tricked Tommen. He said that his mother’s love is pure because it’s not of “this” world. This implies that his mother’s love for him is from the gods simply through Cersei but not from her at least not solely from her. He just worded it to where Tommen would listen. That is why I disliked like Tommen as much as Joffrey. Sure Tommen wasn’t cruel but he was so weak he let his pious belief control the realm. And what happened? The destruction of the faith. Remember his first attribute that made a good King when asked by Tywin was holiness.
