Seeing that mermaids do not exist and are mythical creatures. They should look however you want them to look. Ariel in the original book is described thoroughly, and the origin Disney version actually got how Ariel is described pretty spot on. Pale skin due to lack of sunlight, reddish colored hair and blue eyes, is the basic description from the book

The thumbnail [0:00] is not true. Ariel has no official illustration and the first description of Ariel was:
_Her skin was as soft as rose petals, and her eyes as blue as the deep sea. But, like many others, she had no feet. Her body ended in a fish tail._ (paraphrased)

She was also apparently described with white skin in both the original, and in Disney's movie.

Also she wasn't ever given a name, but that has nothing to do with her appearance.

What about the hair? Well, her hair wasn't described either. Almost everything about her appearance was up for interpretation. The illustration was either someone's interpretation, (who didn't read the story and just wanted to make it scary) or a random mermaid drawing that someone decided to use to spread misinformation across the internet.
