WHO I AM

Hello, I'm Jen Campbell. I'm an award-winning poet and bestselling author of twelve books, spanning short stories, poetry, picture books, and nonfiction.

My books for adults include The Beginning of the World in the Middle of the Night, The Girl Aquarium, The Bookshop Book, and The Sunday Times bestselling Weird Things Customers Say in Bookshops series. My picture book trilogy Franklin and Luna, and my middle-grade book The Sister Who Ate Her Brothers, are published by Thames & Hudson.

I've won both an Eric Gregory Award and the Jane Martin Poetry Prize, my books have been translated into twenty languages, and I have two new titles forthcoming in 2023 — more details on those soon.

I've worked in the publishing industry for over fifteen years, initially as a bookseller, and now as a freelance editor, content creator and disability advocate. I review books online, in print and on the radio. I run a Youtube channel where I talk about books, the history of fairy tales, and the representation of disability and disfigurement. I also offer online writing workshops and editorial services, give talks at schools, publishing companies, universities and book festivals on a variety of topics, and I run a book club for TOAST clothing.

Definitely getting Lapvona vibes from that Blue Hunger cover too. But more importantly, the book sounds really good! Another one for my never ending list of new releases 😂

Good haul! I recently got The Whispering Muse by Laura Purcell out from the library, and I absolutely adored it. Favourite book of the year so far. I also picked up Unraveller by Frances Hardinge, which I plan to pick up next. I’ve bought Cleopatra and Frankenstein by Coco Mellers, Conversations on Love by Natasha Lunn, Girl Friends by Holly Bourne, and Notes on an Execution by Danya Kukafka. Lots of stuff to read!

I had a book voucher for Christmas and had Covid for most of January, so have just started to spend it. Firstly I bought the new Ayobami Adebayo - just had to! Also bought The Arsonists' City as recommended by Mercedes! Am also reading Elif Shafak's backlist - so bought Three Daughters of Eve. Am a cat lover so whilst physical book shopping, bought She and Her Cat by Makoto Shinkai and Naruki Nagakawa and The Last Colony by Philippe Sands. I think I will get Dog Hearted for my sister. Currently reading for US Black History Month - The Book of Harlan by Bernice L McFadden and Memorial Drive by Natasha Trethewey and loving both. Took part in BrownGirlReading's readalong of Like Trees, Walking by Ravi Howard which was fab! Hope you had a lovely birthday!

I went thrifting yesterday and hauled a handful of books - Stoner, The Great Gatsby, Good Morning Midnight, The Outsider (Camus), How to Be Both and The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle. It was a nice serotonin boost!

Books I have recently hauled are The New Annotated Frankenstein by Mary Shelley with notes by Leslie Klinger, The Ripper's Shadow by Laura Joh Rowland (I have no idea if it will be good) and A Christmas Party, which is a drawing room mystery by Georgette Heyer. I am also reading through T. Kingfisher's catalogue. I love her books so much! Currently reading her Paladin series and am about to start What Moves the Dead, which is a retelling of The Fall of the House of Usher. Happy Birthday, Jen -- hope you had a lovely celebration!

I just checked out two books from the library, both unknown and on impulse - Unseen Magic by Emily Lloyd-Jones, a middle grade about a girl suffering from severe anxiety who lives in a magical little town in the coast redwoods. Five stars. There's a sequel coming out this year. I also checked out History of the Rain by Naill Williams and about 30 pages in I realized the writing is beautiful and clever but I'm not sure I'm in the mood for reading it at the moment.

Hi Jen, Happy belated birthday. I know you are always looking for a crime series recommendation. I have just read The Chalk Pit by Elly Griffiths. It has a male and a female lead. The female is a local Professor of forensic archaeology and the male is a DI. It was both cosy and modern. It was page turning but not gratuitous. And I really enjoyed the relationships between the characters. It is the first book of hers that I have read but not the first in the series and I'm looking forward to reading more.
Thank you for your content. I always look forward to watching.

Oh, the joy of finding you have £10 in Waterstones credit! I recently went to order the gorgeous special edition of Laura Shepherd-Robinson’s upcoming historical fiction book, only available at Waterstones. I was even ready to fork over the £12.50 for international shipping. But then I see a £10 credit! Yay!

Remarkably Bright Creatures, by Shelby Van Pelt. It was unexpectedly beautiful, sad and comforting. It is a new favorite, with a unique protagonist.

How are you doing mr Jen . Happy valentine day to you. Happy birthday day too . Iam Arabic lady subscriber to several British and American YouTube channels too . I sent comments to you before . We are as foreigners subscribers as overseas students want to increase our cultural level improve our English language as well, literature lovers too . But first of all make friendships with people from different countries. I really can’t believe myself to be subscriber to famous British author as you . Dr octavia Cox she is British university professor in classical literature channel. And lam subscriber to her channel too unfortunately she stopped posting videos for personal circumstances. It’s great ideas to show people titles of books and encourage them to read learn new information. So that I chose of books you mentioned just main theme and author biography briefly here it’s it’s watching women and girls summary plot moving debut short story collection explores how women are perceived by others, but also how they perceive themselves, it’s small funny heart wrenching mediations on womanhood that ponder how living under microscope can shape their passion, fear, joy .
