I’m glad she gave him to you, I’ve been breeding bettas for years now, and all of the bettas I am keeping/kept to breed in to future each have a 5 gallon planted aquarium. But it’s sad because when I first started this hobby I made the same mistake by keeping my bettas in bowls with artificial decor, and not even knowing what the nitrogen cycle was. But I wish you the best of luck! And keep us updated!

Betas are the most mistreated pets, I don’t think it’s intentional most people just don’t know what they require, I’m glad you’re giving him a good home :)

My dad and I just set up our aquarium. We're cycling it now before we put in the fish, but we're planning to get a betta. We do have a heater (and we did a lot of research on betta compatibility and temps for all our planned new babies). I'm happy to see this fish getting a nice, warm, filtered home. Props to your friend for knowing when to find their pet a new home. This makes me wonder if we have enough decorations. The set we got had a rock that was smaller than I expected :/

I'm so glad toy changed his tank. I'm am not lying when I saw my daughters won a gold fish from a fair and she lived 3 years. She got to be about 5 inches long. She was so sweet. She'd get excited when we got home and let us pet her.

They love large floating plants like large water wisteria. They’ll build a bubble nest and even drape themselves amongst the leaves to rest.

Oh my God, his fins look so much better since you got him

Awww he's gonna live a happy life with you. I bet you'll notice him looking better pretty soon too. Pretty boy but you can tell he wasn't looked after before.

I'm so glad you gave him such a good home. I've had many Bettas. I used to get a bunch of sad Betta and get them great setups. Also they are usually aggressive with other aggressive fish. So I did have a few with some friends and never had a problem.

First of all a big THANK YOU for actually putting that poor fish into a real tank and giving him the required water temperature that he needs to live a happy life. BUT. Where's the filter gone? You don't have enough plants beneficial to water quality yet in the tank to run it without a filter. (also: more plants -> happier betta as they like denser plants and less light and preferrably a dark ground)
I'd suggest a small bubbly filter since a lot of water movement is taking a toll on long finned bettas.
And lastly, I would cover up that tank as bettas can jump quite well.
Been keeping bettas for decades now and they're such beautiful fish each with their own personality and quirks. My oldest one got to live almost 6 years she was a real fish granny.

Careful with that tetra heater. I came home one day to over heated water and a sad fish (he survived). I don't know what happened but the heater broke.

He looked so sad and cramped in the little bowl, his fins were all together

Now it looks like he can breathe and stretch out and it makes me so happy for him/y’all

You did such a good job and will do such a good job caring for him

Good on you and your friend for recognizing that the fish needed to move house where they could get better care ❤

What a pretty fish. I enjoyed watching your full story. I've always wanted to sleep with the soft lights and sounds from an aquarium, but I know nothing about fish.

When I was a kid my parents got me Sea Monkeys. After a month, the pressure of trying to keep them alive, give them each equal amounts of attention and my fear that they would die have me huge existential dread at the age of 9.

I'd gone from a weird kid with no friends but happiness in my books, to a neurotic with panic attacks over Sea Monkeys.

My parents promised to find them s good home, and I adopted my first large dog after I graduated college and got my own place.

100% dog person. I still feel bad for the sea monkeys

He's a very pretty fish and I'm happy he will live out the rest of his years in a good home ❤

You can already see how the water biofilm is building up from the lack of surface agitation. You need something breaking that to keep the tank from going stagnant, at least a bubbler but hopefully a filter.

We (my mom) had Bettas for years and never new they needed heaters 😲. Myself, I had a 55 gallon tank with all the proper stuff, it did great until one day the pump just suddenly started pumping water out the back instead of into the tank, while we were gone for a few hours, and we came home to a flooded upstairs room.

I would suggest getting a lid of some kind! Bettas are notorious for jumping out of their aquariums and dying, and also just having a lid will also keep the water from evaporating faster! You could probably get away with a lid that covers most of it, but if you can completely seal it that would work best!

I congratulate you for being a good owner and giving him a heater. 🙂

I love how kind you are to him!
Some people think they're "just a fish", which infuriates me!
They deserve a good life just like any living creature! ❤️
(BTW, your nails are FIRE! 💅)
