Fabulous information on the finer details of replacing the timing belt! Many thanks Kelvin. BTW, I just did the water pump and timing belt on my GS400, and upon installing a fresh cam tensioner pulley, I destroyed the threads in the aluminium. Is it ok to install a helicoil, or is there not enough wall thickness? Also, the axis of my shiny new threads won't be as square to the datum surface. How bad did I scrubb it?!

Thanks again for all of your bad ass videos Kelvin! BTW, I just finished installing the timing belt on my 1UZFE VVTI, and I noticed that, as I rotated the crank (with no spark plugs), the cam pulleys lined up with their marks every 2 rotations of the crank. However, the marks on the belt progressed ahead of the cam pulley marks, about 1 tooth per crank revolution. 8 crank rotations into it, the cam pulleys line up with the crank perfectly, but the belt marks are way advanced (don't line up). I would have noticed a valve collide already by 8 turns, right?

Hey, My cams themselves came out for a cam seal change and when it was put back together the dots were lined up on the sisscor gears then the pulleys were spun to align with the marks and it was all put back together and now it runs extremely rough. Am i missing something or what did i do wrong?

Kelvin, you’ve obviously done heaps of these jobs. Is it necessary to place the crank 50 degrees after tdc as per the service manual when replacing the belt ? I’m guessing this is to prevent valves hitting pistons if the cams turn with the belt off.

I’m having trouble with the exhaust cam timing, are the dots on the inner gears suppose to be lined up perfectly? I seen they are suppose to be 10 degrees off on another guys video but that doesn’t make sense to me, my car seems like it’s running on 4 cylinders but passed leakdown test
