I'm surprised this is a maths olympiad question. It's just substitution and a quadratic.

The reason these two equations when used in the substitution method work as a quadratic is because if you take the second equation X times Y and think of them as a quadratic x being the first term y being the last term multiplied together and the first equation X plus Y being the first and the last term added together. It's the same logic used to solve a quadratic. Except in this case, the solutions are only complex solutions.
