What is the New Russian Peace Flag?

Since the start of Russia's Invasion of Ukraine, countries around the world have come out in opposition, often using the Ukrainian flag as a symbol of resistance. For Russian citizens opposed to the war, their flag became a symbol associated with the occupying forces, and so a new Russian flag, a Russian peace flag of white-blue-white was posted and popularised both online and at protests.

Looks like a clean blue river running through a pure white snow.

This sounds like nonsense, but I can’t deny the resemblance of the protest flag with the flag of the Argentine province of Tucumán, the flag that is now in use for the province was the first Argentine flag, made by one of our founding fathers, Manuel Belgrano, he based it on the revolutionary cockade used by Argentines. It’s probably completely coincidental, but I still couldn’t ignore it’s resemblance

A boy snatched a tricolor flag with its staff from above a house-gate, ripped off the blue and white strips, and raised the red remainder of the “national” flag high above the crowd. Dozens of people followed his example. A few minutes later a multitude of red flags were waving above the mass of people. White and blue scraps of material lay everywhere and the crowd trampled them with their feet.

It's very bizarre to see people insist on Russia still being communist in any way. A lot of Ukrainian politicians talk about Russia as if it is communist and you hear constant comparisons between Putin's amibitions and the USSR despite the Russian Empire being a far better comparison in most aspects

It's not quite "Belarusian protest flag", actually it's genuine Belarusian flag, the current official flag is the Soviet one.

Novgorod Republic never had a flag. Even though it is called "republic" it was a very distinctive political entity. Even on it's large scale military campaigns it's militia was merging with the hired-to-rule prince's druzhina under his flag or under Russian Orthodox cross.

As a Russian myself, I just want to say, this is not my flag and never will be. I despise people staying under it and behind it even more than Putin and his deeds.
So calling it a "new Russian Flag" is kinda overstatement.

the only purpose for this flag is to wipe yourself when you are short on toilet paper

The Novgorod Republic was definitely not a more democratic state; it was very clearly an oligarchy. Power was almost entirely centered among the wealthy elite families of the time, which during Ivan's time, were the boyars. Republic =/= freedom, it just means their society wasn't monarchial (although it was, their Rurikid princes were just elected by their elite).

Also, side note, Magellan TV has a documentary about Ivan IV, where historians and psychologists explain Ivan's behavior becomes more understandable when you look at the way the boyars (most of them from Novgorod's sphere) abused him.

I think this flag has a huge problem:
It was created on a false idea that the red solely represented blood and imperialism. It does not.
Like the video showed red in the flag represented the people of Russia.
The blue-white-blue flag idea is very artificial, and it doesn't have the same historical importance in representing people of Russia than the tricolor white-blue-red.

Many people wonder what is the reason to change the flag? The most important one is that after 24th February Russian opposition living abroad could not use the official flag in Pro-Ukraine rallies because official flags were used by pro-Putin Russians alongside with the "Z" symbol to show support for the invasion. So there was a deep need for some symbols for the Russian opposition to develop some sort of distinction symbols to be absolutely clear and easy to explain what are they standing for. Honestly speaking historical references and other matters of symbolism were much less important in making the decision on adopting this flag.

That desing was also used as one of the many early prototype national flags of Argentina, this type was specifically used by general Belgrano in 1812.

a flag represents so much. the meaning can be subtle or in your face. what they stand for can change with time also. pride, prejudice defiance or support, all from a piece of cloth.

As a native russian, I do not like this flag, why we have to change our many hundred years historical flag on this thing, that makes no sense?

After month of fighting, I heard some shouting from the Helsinki city center (Finland). I was with my friend walking home from work, and we were curious about what was happening and went to look. We knew it was some kind of protest. Then we saw these flags along with Ukrainian flags, and I was thinking: "Is that some kind of anti-Christian flag of Finland?" My friend could speak Russian and he understood what they were shouting. It was Russians against Putin march. We then understood that the flag we saw everywhere was for them, not for Finland. We joined the march for some time.
