Korean Natural Farming (KNF) is an eco-friendly agricultural system that cultivates nutritious and healthy soil without using chemicals. It is a practice of using indigenous microorganisms and nutritive cycles to grow food and raise animals. Soil health is crucial to have healthy, thriving plants. Using the KNF system there are several agricultural inputs using locally available ingredients. Here we made a Lactic Acid Bacteria input (LAB). These are anaerobic organisms which convert sugar to lactic acid; in the absence of oxygen. Lactobacillius lives on the surface of certain plants where it protects the plant from certain microbes. This practice involves the addition of lactobacilli to the soil to create a healthy micro biome that can help soil retain moisture, facilitate the uptake of nutrients, protect plants from harmful pathogens, and improve soil structure.

LAB:
1 Cup rice
1 Cup water
1 Cup Milk
Brown sugar (optional) if you don’t use—LAB should be stored in fridge

Add rice to a bowl, add water and stir for a few minutes, the water will turn cloudy. Strain rice wash into a clean jar and cover with cheese cloth. Leave on the counter for a couple days until it starts to have a yeast smell. Add the milk to the fermented rice wash and cover and allow to sit for approximately 3-4 days until the mixture separates and you have the curd on top and liquid on bottom. Remove the curd and strain liquid into a clean jar. At this point you can add brown sugar to stabilize it to be stored at room temp. Or you can store in the fridge. You use the LAB at 1:1,000 ratio water to LAB and use it to water your gardens. Using lactobacillus in gardening can have significant benefits, as it helps to restore balance to the soil and promote healthy plant growth. With this simple recipe, you can create your lactobacillus serum for use in your garden
