Caterpillar 289D vs ASV 75- Battle of the 74 hp skid steers

We put the Cat 289 D skid steer bucket to bucket against the ASV 75. We chained them together in a pulling contest, then tested them out moving dirt, cycle times of the hydraulics, grading and more.

Biggest thing I saw is one operator is way better than the other. The approach he took to some of the challenges and how he moved material made for the win.

You know it’s a good video when a 20 min video feels like a 5 min video.

Not having operated, owned or ever even used a skid steer, I am now in the market for an ASV. Great Video!

Did I miss the forestry head on the CAT portion of the video? Seeing the difference between hydraulic flow rates would be useful.

I noticed that the cat had standard tracks instead of the multi terrain tracks like the asv

Good lord that forestry head is insane.

We had a 100HP ASV for REA Utility work we used to do way way north Alberta. The ASV kicked every other skid steer to the curb. We use to use CAT and CASE, replace both machines with the one ASV, production stay the same. They are the only machine if your serious that is. Great video, great test.

DM I really am enjoying all of your videos comparing equipment. Had no idea ASV was even still around! ASV was a trac machine before anyone even offered tracks on skid steers... love the videos, thanks for taking me along!

What about vertical lift on the Cat vs non one ASV? Loading ten wheelers? Didn't Cat use to use the ASV style undercarriage and the replacement cost turned off customers? Performance when new was great but with age was scary expensive?

guy in the cat looks like it was his first day operating a skid, also would like to see a cat with the asv track system compared to an asv, both seem like great machines though!

I’d like to see the asv rt 120 vs cat 299 d both with forestery packages

Interesting, very well put together. We run Deere and never have tried a ASV.Kubota isn’t bad.We thought the Cat cab was small and hard to get in and out.

I’d really like to see what you think of a Kubota skid loader. Your mentioning that the cat has a lack of/slow power. I operate a kubota svl 65 and that thing is super smooth, lightening fast, responsive, and has tons of power. We use it for firewood production so it’s moving solid oak logs all day. The frosting on the cake is we have a great kubota dealer in our area as well

So you're comparing open cab vs enclosed. Radial lift vs vertical lift. And 2 completely different track systems. Just because they're same horsepower let's compare them. BTW why try a 287D cat same track system as ASV. Surprised most of the time your videos aren't so off.

ASV is going to be a big contender in the skid steer market for sure

Im not a huge fan of CAT but that ASV weighs about 1, 300lbs less then the CAT and they both are at the same HP level. Its by nature going to be slower in movement & less responsive, its moving 1, 300lbs more around the whole time. The CAT 259D is a more comparable machine. With that said youd think it would have been able to drag the ASV around when they were hooked up? Another fun video Stan! Well worth the watch!!

Nothing against you guys but I have spent a long time running an ASV with a forestry head and you are being very unsafe around that. Those can pick up rocks and hurt and even kill people if they are hit by them. You shouldn't be walking around there when that thing is running and having another guy in a machine without the proper protective cage is dangerous.

Great video, I like all the head to head videos you have been doing lately.

Put 2000 hours on each machine and try it again. You will have exactly what you paid for.
