The problem with math is the results are close but never exact, but when there are hundreds of variables in the equation the fudge factor is too large to trust the math. The fudge factor is a percentage added to try to cover the assumed values that throw off the solution. That re-entry success may only happen during that time of year. With the sun moving south comes changes in the atmosphere, that is nearly impossible to predict. If Eigenvalues are applied to every variable, we will never fully understand the variables, so we need to study the atmo all year around. The thickness of the atmo is a 3D waveform like waves in the ocean, this is what freaks out our weather models in predicting hurricane paths. Understanding gravity is another issue, as the gravity issue going up is different from the gravity effect coming down. If we could only stop in orbit and drop an anchor 4 miles into the atmo to return, we could change our problems. The anchor idea has been tossed around for years.

This flight was never a failure!!! What the hell could any engineer have expected to happen when a vessel of the size falls over
