Born and raised Catholic and planning on dying a faithful servant of Christ as a faithful member of His Church! This movie shows the reality of the power of God’s love for us and how we are blessed by serving one another in love! Praise God, from whom all blessings flow. Great movie about great men of God fighting evil with love.

What a wonderful movie.
Never seen it before.
So difficult to find a worthwhile film to watch but this classic doesn't disappoint.

I'd like to answer my own question posed in an earlier comment. After a little research, I know that Herbert Kappler was put on trial for war crimes in 1947 and condemned to a life sentence in an Italian prison. His wife Leonore divorced him in 1948, so that's why she didn't visit him in prison. He had supervised the killing of 335 Italian civilians during the war, which explains why he was given a long sentence. He eventually escaped from an Italian hospital and died from stomach cancer 6 months later in Germany, aged 70. Hugh O'Flaherty suffered a stroke, returned to Ireland and died in 1963, aged 65. Maybe the stress of the war and his work saving others shortened his own life. As you see, this was a haunting film.

Always a pleasure to see three great actors (Sir John Gielgud, Gregory Peck & Christopher Plummer) together. Thank you for posting this!

I am not a Catholic, but I was mesmerized by this movie especially as it was a true story. I am astounded that this movie is not more widely known. The ending was one of the most powerful and emotional that I have ever experienced in cinema.

What a fantastic story! God bless Monsignor Hugh O'Flaherty and the organization he started, without violence, in finding safe houses for all those prisoners of war.
This true account is better than Shindler's List. I hope they never remake it. The actors were perfect.
The lessons we learn in forgiveness...

Such a superb film and, even more so now that I know it was a true story. Father an amazing human being ! Risking his life to save so many others. And, then we find out that he also saved Kappler's wife and children too ! Such courage, such passion such kindness. It's wonderful to hear that such precious people actually exist.
Quite humbling to watch this excellent film.

I want also to add that Morricone's thin score added much tension to the drama, using a simple drum even with great effect.

The postwar relationship between O'Flaherety and Kappler could be a fascinating movie.
